Her chin lifts defiantly. “Says the wolf to Little Red Riding Hood. If anyone is dangerous, it’s you.”
I almost laugh at how true that is. “That’s right, little girl,” I purr, and before I can stop myself, my hands slip around her slender waist, and I pull her close, my lips near her ear. “And we both know how easy it would be for me to gobble you up.”
Sexual tension radiates through my body to hers, hers to mine. Her breath, warm and seductive, fans my neck. My groin tightens, my body heats with demand. Memories of her on top of me, her breasts high, her nipples pink and pebbled, flash in my mind. The thought of having her naked, all that creamy white skin pressed close, taunts me. Her body, hot and wet, wrapped around me, riding me.
With a low growl, I set her back, put distance between us before I really do gobble her up and enjoy every minute of doing it. Before I leave her with that psychic imprint we have to avoid.
“I want you, Layla, but there are reasons I can’t have you, a lot of reasons. The least of which being that if we were intimate, you’d carry the tracking residue.”
She draws a shaky breath and lets it out, that full bottom lip of hers that I so flipping adore, quivering. “Yeah, well, I can’t trust you either,” she assures me, clearly assuming that’s what I meant.
“But you want to.”
She hesitates, seeming to weigh her words, but finally admits, “Yes, yes, I do.”
I arch a brow. “And?”
“And what?”
“And you want me.”
Her eyes go wide. “You want me to say I want you?”
“That’s right. I admitted I want you. We might not have trust, but we might as well be honest with each other.”
She shakes her head as if clearing cobwebs. “You do realize that statement made absolutely no sense. Trust and honesty are the same. And based on that reality, I could say I want you and be lying.”
“Fair enough. So humor me. Say it.” I don’t know why I want to hear it so badly. Words shouldn’t matter when I see the truth in her eyes, and I’ve tasted it in her kisses, but they do. I need them. I need her.
“Okay then,” she concedes. “Yes.” Her voice turns raspy. “I want you.”
My lips lift in a smile at her confession. I have no idea why making her admit that out loud means so much to me, why I burned for it so badly, but I did, and I do, and I like it a lot. One hell of a lot.
She shakes her head. “I could be lying.”
My smile widens. “But we both know you aren’t.”
Chapter fourteen
Julian
Imaterialize in two silent strands of wind inside the parking garage where Tad awaits our arrival. Dorian is becoming a force of nature keeping pace, immediately by my side.
“Well?” I demand of Tad. “Where is she?”
“Her tracking device was removed,” he says. “But she couldn’t have gotten too far. We have men all over the garage looking for her.”
I level Tad in a stare. “This happened how?”
“We had her at the motel,” Tad assures me. “But your brother showed up. He put himself in the line of fire to protect the woman, knowing we would not kill him.”
Dorian tilts his head to the side. “My uncle is very strategic, isn’t he, Father?”
“He is,” I agree. “A talent we will appreciate more when he has joined our cause.”
“I wish to meet him,” Dorian states, a robotic quality to the words.
“You will,” I assure him. “Just as the world will soon meet you.”
