I shook my head. “She didn’t rub me the wrong way with that. She was trying to get a read on me. I dealt with it because she’s your girl.”

“That doesn’t make it right, but she didn’t mean anything by it.”

“Good. I’m surprised she told you to ask me if I was having a midlife crisis.”

Mickayla grimaced and hell if it wasn’t cute. “She planted the seed of concern, but Heidi’s the one who told me to ask you.”

I nearly spit out my coffee. “Heidi. As in Block’s old lady, Heidi?”

She sighed. “Yes, but she’s cool, honey. Seriously.”

I held up my index finger in the air. “So we got Lark who knows, and he’s around your brothers and could inadvertently let it slip.” I held up a second finger. “Now Heidi knows, but even though she’s out in Biloxi, she’s your mom’s girl and I’m guessing they talk all the time. She could slip up and tell Vickie, or worse, she tells Block - and he tells Gamble.”

Knowing Block, he'd ride out for me on his own. Even if it made him a hypocrite.

She put her fork down. “Lark is a concern. Heidi’s not gonna say shit.”

I gave her a skeptical grimace. “I’ve seen her tie one on, hon. She’s the epitome of loose lips. Jabbers non-fuckin’-stop. My point is, we gotta let the brothers know.”

She tilted her head back for a second. “Let me talk to Lark. I need to review the agreement for the bar and grille. I have my own copy of it, but I can’t find the damn thing. It’s probably in a box or something. I know he has it at the ready. Then we can come clean on Sunday.”

“That’ll work.”

“Good.”

“You need to tell Lark you’re going to Bike Week with me.”

Her face froze. “About that, um—”

“Mick, do not tell me Bike Week isn’t your thing.”

It would kill me if she were just like Sarah that way. Act like being on my bike is the best damn thing in the world only to yank the rug out from under me now.

“N-No, I already told Lark I was more than happy to manage the bar and grille that whole week so he could attend without any worries.”

“Shit,” I whispered.

She reached across the table and grabbed my hand. “I’ve never been, but I’m dying to go.”

I nodded. “That’s good to hear, woman. Tell him to block out Biketoberfest for you.”

“I shouldn’t point this out, but I get the feeling that Sarah didn’t like any kind of rally.”

She was so damn perceptive. I liked that.

“No. And that’s gonna be the last time I let her shit bleed into what we’re building.”

“Cool.”

The roar of a motorcycle grew louder outside her trailer. There were some people with bikes in her community, but the sound came closer.

“Shit,” I muttered.

“If that is my brother,” she said and closed her eyes.

“I’ll be in your bedroom, Mick. Will it tip anyone off, if I shut the door?”

She shook her head. “Not at all. I’m sorry.”
