“And that sent him over the edge,” I surmised.

“That’s as much as I can tell you. Bottom line, the actual Pub-crawler is in custody in Wyoming.”

Tundra stood and shook the officer’s hand. “Thank you for taking the time to see us.”

He nodded. “You’re welcome.”

Tundra went upstairs to shower not long after the police officer left.

I padded into the kitchen and grabbed a soda from the fridge when someone knocked at the door.

Through the peephole, I saw Lark on the stoop.

I thought about ignoring his knock, but my every instinct said he wouldn’t leave.

I opened the door. “Tundra’s in the shower, and I’m not sure you should be here.”

His lips flattened as thought he was holding back a frown. “That’s fair, but I’m here to talk to you. Only asking for ten minutes of your time so I can apologize.”

Mom and Dad had taught me that if someone tried to apologize, it didn’t say anything good about me if I went out of my way to ignore it or make it harder on that person.

I opened the door a little wider to let him inside.

Once I settled on the couch, Lark dragged a kitchen chair close to me. “You doing okay with your recovery? Getting stabbed is a bitch.”

“Do you have experience with that?” I asked.

“Twice. Bar fights. Probably not half as bad as what you went through.”

“He didn’t violate—”

Lark’s eyes widened. “That’s fortunate, but not my point. From what I’ve heard, you needed two pints of blood. That’s serious.”

“Yeah,” I whispered.

“I’m not sorry for calling Biloxi out here,” he said.

I nodded. “Tundra shared as much.”

“I’m sure he did.”

“Did you want me out all along?” I asked…even though I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer.

“You know better than that.”

“You voted for me to be fired based on breach of contract. That’s…” I wanted to say unforgivable, but something held me back.

“It’s despicable the way I voted, but the thing is, that contract’s ridiculous. They weren’t going to enforce it, so why bother all of us with it?”

I stared at him for a long moment. “So you made an example of me.”

His brows arched. “Yeah. And I’m not sorry for that either.”

“Would you have done it if it were Ryan, Killian, or Adam?”

He shrugged. “I’m with Nickel. Hypothetical questions are bullshit. If it had been Ricochet, yeah. I’d have brought it up. May not have been at a full session of church, but shit works out the way it does.”

For him.
