“There isn’t anything out there,” Nickel said.
“Wrong, man. There’s a some farms, a big old-fashioned church, and the occasional house,” Ricochet corrected.
“Pray that motherfucker didn’t ditch her car there,” Gamble said.
Yeah, I couldn’t contemplate that because it was the exact thing a psycho would do.
“Was your ex and your sister there?” Gamble asked from the backseat.
I sighed. “Yeah. Why Sarah was there, I don’t understand.”
Ricochet glanced at me and back to the two-lane road. “She came in a couple nights ago.”
“How do you know?” Nickel asked.
“I remember faces, not names. Hell, Duane walked her to her car.”
“Was she in on this with him?” Nickel asked.
“That’s far fetched, but text Lark and Volt to make sure she doesn’t leave because you could be right,” I said.
Gamble’s phone chimed. “Har, Block, and Tiny are headed our way.”
“We don’t want to announce ourselves,” Ricochet said.
“They borrowed Volt’s Hummer,” Gamble said.
We approached a stop sign. “Take a left here,” I said.
We passed the old-fashioned looking church Ricochet had mentioned.
“How much farther?” Gamble asked.
I sighed. “There’s no scale on this map, but I’m guessing another mile west.”
We rode half a mile before the tall stands of pine trees thinned out.
On the right side of the road, the land suddenly cleared. It looked like a dirt trail spanned the property.
Ricochet glanced in that direction. “What the fuck? I didn’t know there was a dirt bike course out here.”
“Mickayla mentioned it last summer, man,” Nickel said. Then he added, “I don’t have a good—”
“Shut it,” Gamble said.
I clenched my teeth. Nickel wasn’t the only one who didn’t have a good feeling about this.
The app indicated we were approaching her car.
“Turn right at that driveway coming up.”
“Fuck,” Ricochet muttered.
“Don’t go there, Killian,” Gamble said. The words were so clipped and his voice so tight, it sounded like he spoke through clenched teeth.
Clicking sounds came from the back seat. I looked over my shoulder and saw Gamble was checking the ammo in his gun.
“Where’s your piece?” Gamble asked.
