“Does Dario have an army like before?” I need to figure out what the logistics are and how many men he has at his disposal.

“There’s only him and me. The ones you killed at the restaurant were his last guards. Nobody wanted to join the Vicious Vipers again.”

A small smile breaks out on my face; I mask it in an instant.

“How much do you know about my mother and Lana’s parents?” My question makes him draw his eyebrows together; he knows that we know.

“How did you figure it out?” he asks, and I cross my arms, keeping my face and tone flat.

“You’re not at liberty to ask questions.”

Sara pushes her knife a tiny bit into his dick, and he’s violently shaking his head. “No, no, no!”

“Hurry this up, M, I have dinner reservations with Adam in like an hour.” She doesn’t.

“Yeah, and I want to finish those tacos you made.”

“Yawn.”

Hana and Lana are a great tag-team, and I almost burst out in laughter. I turn my attention back to Evan. I nod to him, indicating that he must answer my question.

“Fine.” He stops protesting. “Your mom knew her father because she took martial arts lessons when she was a teenager and he was in her class. Later on, they became fast friends along with his wife. Even though they were slightly older than her, she didn’t mind. The communication ceased when she got married to Dario.”

“Why?”

“Leon was Dario’s biggest rival, and he didn’t like that she had any relationships outside him. She wanted to leave him, but then she got pregnant with you. He threatened her that if she ever saw them again, he would kill you.”

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Dario hated any emotion, but this is wild. He’s a monster.

“He hated you so much.” Evan addresses me. “He wanted to mold you into his powerful soldier; he failed because of your mom. She showed you love and friendship. Seven years ago, Dario found something.” He grins and shows his bare teeth. This can’t be good.

“When your mom was in Tuzla for her treatments, Dario found letters. Letters from…” He turns towards Lana. “Your parents.”

You could hear a pin drop, and we’re all doing our best to remain looking bored. He can’t see us getting angry, although he’s doing everything in his power to get a rise out of us.

He turns towards me again. “Your mom sent Leon all of Dario’s secret locations in hopes that you might need it someday. She hoped that you and Lana would team up together; all of those idiots did. Anita also ordered Leon to burn the ones she sent him, for safety purposes.”

“What happened to those letters?” Deep breaths, Noa. Deep breaths. We don’t reveal to him that we know of Marijin Kutak; thank fuck Lana kept Leon’s notes.

“He burned everything. After her death, Dario tried to recruit Leon through official channels, but he never got a response. Which was weird since he was very active in doing hits.”

Lana steps forward, crosses her arms, and tilts her head to the side. “He wasn’t doing those hits; I was. My baba was too sick to do anything.”

“I don’t believe that a woman–” He widens his eyes and looks at Sara, who’s shaking her head. “Dario requested Leon to kill you, and when he refused, he took that as an insult. He couldn’t believe that he would turn down almost a billion euros.” I believe what Evan’s saying, and it’s fucked up. Dario’s inept to feel any emotion; that’s why he was in disbelief that Leon couldn’t kill a man he never met. To hell with it if it was his best friend’s son.

I was merely a puppet in his eyes, and a puppet to abuse. I was never a son to him, and he sure as shit wasn’t my father.

But then it hits me; Leon not only refused because I was his best friend’s son. Lana was doing all his hits so she would’ve gotten the brunt end of it. He probably didn’t want us fighting.

“Let me guess, he ordered the hit on Leon, and you were the one who killed him disguised as me?” I ask him, knowing the answer.

“Bingo. You are a roach; nothing could kill you. So what’s a better way than to send his daughter on a path of revenge to kill you? Two birds with one stone; you’d be dead, and he would’ve gotten revenge on Anita that way.”

I turn to Lana and look so bored, but I know her better. Out of Evan’s vision, she’s pinching the flesh of her arm—a nervous habit of hers.

“Where is he now?” I ask him.

“He’s in Marijin Kutak and lives in the first house when you enter it. He’s waiting for me.”
