“I don’t know.”

What a privilege it would be to know how they knew each other. But now is not the time to find out. Dario’s still out there, and he’s probably regrouping.

Before we do any of that, one thing needs to get settled.

“This is a pretty stupid question, but how are you feeling? Emin meant so much to you.”

“I’m feeling pretty fucking bad, especially because that asshole is still out there. And to top it all off, I need to plan a funeral for the person who has been there for me my whole life.” Anger and grief intersperse in her words, and I wish I could take it all away.

“Listen, I’m not religious, but I know that Emin was. He was from Tuzla, right?”

“Yeah, and he wants to be buried there.”

“I’ll call the imam my mama was close to, and I’ll have him arrange the funeral. Don’t worry, you won’t do this alone.” I tell her as I stroke her cheeks. She looks up at me like I hung the moon, while I just did a basic humane thing.

“You’d do that for me? Even though you are not religious and believe in that stuff?”

I kiss her on the lips and put my forehead on hers. “I believe in you.”

She hugs me tightly, and we sink into each other’s arms. Dario can put a gun to my head, and I still wouldn’t let her go. I would crawl to her in the middle of the night through broken glass if I could steal one glance.

My train of thought is interrupted by my team coming down the stairs.

“Okay, you lovebirds, we need to plan the downfall of an evil father.” Sara’s right.

It’s time that my father meets the face of vengeance.

Chapter forty-eight

Lana

Next day

Josh is finally out of the hospital, and he’s doing well, on his way to a full recovery. He told us the doctor said that he can go home. Apparently, he’s stable enough, but not off the hook. He must be under strict supervision, not being left alone, and immediately return to the hospital if anything changes. That’s why he’s sitting with us right now, trying to figure out how to take down Dario.

Life is all about curveballs, and it hit me square in the face with Dario. There are people in the world who do bad things because of the cards they’ve been dealt; other people are just evil.

Dario is pure evil.

He didn’t have a bad childhood or anything like that; that man wants to be evil just to be evil. He’s a stone-cold psychopath and thinks of himself as the main character in the world. Grandiose ideas fill his mind, and he believes that every major decision should have him in the center. He’s also charming and could talk the devil out of doing something stupid.

No wonder he amassed such a following in a short period of time.

“You’re deep in your thoughts,” Sara remarks, and when I look at her, I can sense that she’s probably thinking the same thing as me.

How to really hurt Dario.

I know that revenge won’t bring Emin back, but it’ll help me survive his loss. The hole in my chest won’t disappear because of it, but at least my grief has somewhere to go. Something to focus on. It’s how I’m surviving losing my best friend.

Dario pushed me over the edge; now I’m taking him with me.

“I am, and I think I know how to really hurt him,” I announce to the team, and they look at me with a weird look in their eyes, while Sara’s grinning.

I continue without waiting for their response. “Dario is a psychopath, and one who thinks of himself as grandiose.”

“Yes, and? He’s also dangerous.” Oliver counteracts. I understand his reaction, but there are layers to Dario.

Something I need to explain to them, and what Sara already knows.
