But I was pretty sure I was neck-deep in my feelings for Cain right that moment.

Eventually, we untangled, got dressed, and Cain started the process of cleaning the room while I kept him company with conversation.

It wasn’t until everything that had been tossed had found its home again that Cain turned to me, his face more serious than I’d ever seen it.

“What is it?” I asked, stomach swirling, some part of me worrying he was going to flip the switch on me.

“I need to talk to you about something, but I need you to understand first that I am not going to let it happen.”

My heart was galloping.

“What is it?”

Cain exhaled hard and came to the end of the bed I was sitting on.

“I think it’s time to start to consider the fact that your ex is trying to kill you.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Cain

I’d considered not telling her my concerns until I had some sort of proof to give her.

The thing was, she’d spent so much of her life having someone else make her decisions for her. I didn’t want to continue that. This involved her. She had a right to know what I’d come to terms with while cleaning up the mess in her room.

Sure, people got robbed sometimes.

But the whole place was tossed. Every drawer. Anyone looking for a high-priced item to hock wouldn’t upturn her makeup into the sink.

This seemed like someone was looking for something. A clue to, what, where she was? Who she might have connections to? So he could send someone to try to run her off the road again? Or slash her tires? Cut her brake lines?

“That’s crazy,” Georgie declared after staring at me like I’d suddenly grown another head for a moment. “You’re not serious, right? Why would Perry want to kill me? I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that he was chasing me down to try to get me to talk to him.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, sitting down near her feet and pulling her legs over my lap. “What do you know about Perry’s business?”

“His business? Nothing, really. He didn’t really talk about the specifics outside of what kind of day he had or important meetings that were coming up. Why would his work have anything to do with this?”

“I was just thinking about the day we met. When you were following Perry around dressed like a cat burglar.”

“Okay. What about that day?”

“What the fuck was Perry doing in that part of town?”

I watched as some pieces fell into place at that.

“I’d actually been wondering that when I’d been following him. He never came down this way. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with the area he was in, per se. But it wasn’t his kind of place, if you know what I mean.”

“I do. He looked out of place as fuck where he was. Which got me thinking… what was he doing there? Who was he meeting with? And why?”

“That’s… aren’t bad questions to ask, but I really don’t see how that would tie into this breaking and entering.”

“And the car crash. And the creepy guy. And the slashed tire.”

“Slashed? You didn’t mention slashed.”

“I’m not positive, but it didn’t look like a typical flat like you’d see from a screw or something like that.”

While I’d been working on the bathroom, I’d paused to shoot a quick text to Spike—asking him to head over to Repo’s place to see if he could find her bald-ass tires that I’d left for him to deal with, to see if my suspicions about it were right.
