“Who did?”

“Mac. To look into Noah’s grandmother’s will.”

“He what?” Amy sat up straight. “Without asking you?”

“Just had his assistant hand me the folder, like it was nothing. Like he hadn’t completely overstepped.”

“Dick move,” Amy agreed, taking a sip of her wine. “Though… have you read it?”

Kelsey nodded.

“And?”

“And I’m still trying to process it.”

“Kels.” Amy leaned forward. “You can’t drop a bomb like that and not tell me.”

Kelsey pressed her fingers to her temples. “Margaret is leaving half of everything to David. And if David isn’t alive when she dies, it will go to his children.”

“Okay… How much are we talking about?”

“Over half a billion dollars.”

Amy choked on her wine. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Apparently the Prescotts aren’t just rich, they’re rich rich.”

“Holy shit.” Amy set her glass down carefully. “So all this time, while you’ve been working your ass off to provide a decent life for you and your child…”

“They’ve been sitting on a fortune? Yeah.” Kelsey laughed bitterly. “And now suddenly they want custody.”

“Because Margaret’s getting old,” Amy’s eyes widened. “That’s why Jason is pushing for it now. He wants to control Noah’s inheritance.”

“Got it in one.”

“Those absolute—”

A knock at the door cut her off. Through the screen, they could see Mac standing on the porch, holding Kelsey’s shopping bags in one hand and what looked like takeout in the other.

“I should go,” Amy said, reaching for her purse.

“Don’t you dare.” Kelsey grabbed her sister’s arm. “I can’t deal with him right now.”

Another knock. “Kelsey?” Mac’s voice was hesitant. “I brought your shopping bags. And I… I brought dinner. If you’re hungry.”

Amy raised an eyebrow at her sister. “Want me to tell him to fuck off?”

“I can hear you,” Mac said from the door.

Both sisters looked at each other, and Amy started to laugh. Kelsey couldn’t contain herself and joined in. After a moment, she smothered her smile and went to the door.

“Why are you here?” she demanded as Amy guffawed behind her.

Mac shifted uncomfortably on the porch, another of his scowls between his eyes. “I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking clearly when I asked for the information. I thought it would be useful, but I was wrong to do it. And I want to apologize. I think too much of you to have you angry at me, and I’d like to make it up to you somehow.”

Amy resolutely gathered her purse and jacket. “Well sis, I think maybe you should let him in. It’s a rare thing when a guy admits to being wrong right off the bat like that.” She opened the screen door and pushed past Mac, stumbling a bit on the steps. “Don’t worry, I’m walking home… See you later.”

The screen door closed again between them, and Kelsey stood looking down at Mac on her doorstep. “I don’t appreciate having something like this done for me. Next time please ask before you take my private life into your own hands.”
