“I can’t believe this,” he said as he carefully put her on the floor.

“Me either,” she admitted, finally finding her voice.

He stepped toward the sink and put the pregnancy tests down before turning on the faucet. “I never thought I’d be a dad. I thought you were on birth control.”

“No.” She shook her head. “Haven’t been since…” She cleared her throat. “I didn’t want the daily reminder, and I read too much bad shit about those implant things.”

And until she’d started banging Kid, there hadn’t been a need to worry about getting pregnant. Abstinence was the ultimate method to prevent having a child, and she’d abstained pretty damn well—until she hadn’t.

He twisted back to face her with the biggest smile she’d ever seen.

Her heart flipped in her chest. This was not the reaction she’d expected.

Just when she was allowing herself to enjoy the moment and get excited with the news, his face fell. Dread consumed her.

“Do you…” Kid scrubbed the back of his neck. “Want to have a baby?” he asked. “With me?”

“Yes,” she blurted out before she could think about it. “Of all the people on this planet I could possibly reproduce with, you’re pretty awesome. You took care of me…” She averted her gaze before meeting his again. “I have no doubts you’d be a good dad.”

Kid’s smile returned as he pulled her in for another affectionate hug. While running his hand through her hair, he kissed the top of her head. “If you don’t want to do this, you don’t have to. We’ll figure out the logistics.”

Carrie closed her eyes and squeezed him. She inhaled deeply, and her nose filled with the scent of his deodorant or cologne. The smell was uniquely his, and she relished it.

“I want to.”

“Me too.”
