He looks… undone. Not just physically, not just the aftermath of everything that just happened, but stripped in a way I’ve never seen before. His breathing is still uneven, as if he’s still recovering from the ecstasy.

“You promised,” he says, voice low, softer than I’ve ever heard it, and that alone is enough to throw me off. There’s something almost hesitant in it, as if he’s stepping into territory he doesn’t trust. “Don’t make promises like that if—”

“I do not break promises, Maksim.”

The words come out immediately, like I need to shut that down before he can finish it. My eyes don’t leave his.

They can’t.

He bites his lip, and the silence that follows feels inevitable. It’s heavy and awkward in a way that has nothing to do with what just happened and everything to do with what it meant.

And for the first time since I’ve known Maksim, he’s quiet. There’s no smart remark or jab from him to pull us back into familiar ground.

I hate it.

I’d take his usual chaos over this any day, rather than the way he’s looking at me now, as if there’s something in his head he doesn’t know how to say out loud. There’s a flicker of uncertainty and helplessness in his eyes, and it sits wrong under my skin.

For the first time, I actually want to know what’s going on in that loud, reckless brain of his.

“Oh well,” he says at last, but it sounds forced, as if he’s trying to shove everything back into place. He reaches for his phone, adjusting it. “That was… fun?”

I raise a brow at him, but I don’t answer.

Because fun isn’t the word for whatever the hell just happened.

Not even close.

“I’m gonna go shower,” he adds, glancing down briefly at his cum-stained body before looking back at me. There’s something guarded in his expression that I do not understand. “Thanks for your service.”

And just like that—

He hangs up.

I sit there, staring at the screen in stunned silence, like my brain hasn’t caught up yet, like it’s still trying to process how we got here and how I crossed that line so easily. The screen goes black, and my reflection stares back at me, warped slightly in the dark glass.

Mocking.

Accusing.

Like it already knows the answer to the question forming in my head.

Where the hell did all your composure go?

My jaw tightens.

I fling the phone onto the desk, the sharp clack echoing louder than it should in the quiet office. I look down at my shirt covered in cum, trousers unzipped and cock softening slick against my thigh.

“What the fuck just happened?” I rasp with a frustrated groan.

Chapter 13

MAKSIM

I watch the man I’m supposed to fight tonight, and for a second I think I see a prayer for him form in my head, which is ironic, considering I’m probably the last person who should be thinking about prayers right now.

He looks at me from the other side of the cage with a slow, cruel smile spreading across his lips like he already knows something I don’t, as if he’s already picturing how this will end. I return the smile with one of my own, something unhinged, something that aches at the corners because I haven’t decided yet if I’m amused or just bored.

Caleb tuts beside me, low and disapproving, and throws me a warning look like I’m about to misbehave, which—fair—but I ignore him anyway because why shouldn’t I smile back at the man I’m about to kill tonight?
