“What kind of signs?”

“A cut chain. Fresh boot impressions. Food wrappers that weren’t there during the first search.”

My gaze returned to the dark water.

Someone had been inside Blackwater after the Coast Guard sealed it.

“Any surveillance?” Ward asked.

“The camera covering the eastern cliff went down during the storm four nights ago. They believed it was weather damage.”

“They don’t believe that now.”

“No.”

“Does the commander want my team?”

“He wants to speak to you.”

“I’ll call him.”

“Don’t come to the station,” Ben added.

Ward looked at me.

“Why?”

“The commander is sending two officers to the beach house. They’ll maintain security until we know whether the breach is connected to the body.”

My family had spent three weeks trying to convince ourselves August Ross’s organization died with him.

Apparently, we had been wrong.

Ward ended the call and immediately contacted his men.

I took my phone back.

“Ben?”

“I’m still here.”

“Why would someone return to Blackwater?”

“To recover something.”

“The camera?”

“Possibly.”

“But the camera was still with the body.”

“Yes.”

“Then they didn’t find what they were looking for.”

“No.”

A terrible thought took shape.
