I groaned. “He was actually doing better in Hattie’s arms. They said…I deserved a break.”
“Summer, you do. Please, go shower. I’m on my way back.”
I nodded to myself, taking the first full breath all day. “Okay. I’ll see you when you get home.”
After hanging up, I went into the bathroom and set my phone on the counter before turning on the shower. I quickly dove under the stream of water, and, grabbing the first bottle of shampoo my hands found, I scrubbed my head until my fingers were sore. I was filthy. I was meeting my mates’ mothers while filthy with a screaming baby. That was not the first impression I wanted to make.
Sighing, I pressed my forehead to the shower wall and took a deep breath.
But they had helped, and…this felt damn good.
It was turning into one hell of a day.
Chapter 23
Tobias
“So what are your plans for the weekend?” Alex asked, stapling the bag with the latest prescription in it.
I rolled my lips between my teeth, struggling to come up with an answer. I let the seconds drag, walking over to the other counter to get the bag that was ready and deliver it to the tiny old lady at the counter. When I was finished, I met Alex near the racks behind the counter, and she raised her brows at me, expecting a response.
As much as I was thinking about being with Summer and all the goodness that would involve, I wasn’t ready to give details.
“Nothing much, just staying home. Taking it easy.”
Alex cocked a brow. She knew well enough that Summer was in the picture, and she got that look on her face that meant her mind was going in the gutter.
I rolled my eyes. “Ugh, all right, that’s enough. What are you up to?”
“I wish I had something to do, trust me. But it’ll be another weekend of absolutely nothing.” Alex sighed, tucking her hair behind her ear as she jerked her chin toward the counter. “Hey, isn’t that—”
“Tobias. Get your shit.” Marshall strode up to the counter, tapping on it, his expression severe.
Turning over my shoulder, I glanced at Alex and then back to Marshall.
“You’re leaving work early. Come on,” Marshall said before I could even get a word out.
“Hello to you, too, sunshine.” I chuckled. “What’s got you so grumpy?”
He made a face I’d seen plenty of times, and my stomach clenched. “The mothers are currently descending upon our home.”
I paused. “Our home?”
For a moment, I was confused. Our mothers tended to pop around on a regular basis. It wouldn’t be out of the norm for one of them to bring over some baked goods or just drop by unannounced to see how we’re doing. But Summer was there, so that made this…complicated.
“Yes,” Marshall ground out. “With our mate… the one we never told them about.”
“Fuck.” I’d known this was a risk. We hadn’t updated them about the matchmaking service yet. I mean, sure, we meant to, but…
“She was freaking out on the phone because they barged in like our mothers always do and took over. They were asking about how we all met…”
“Of course they did.” I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “What did she tell them?”
“Nothing, because they bullied her into taking a shower. Which, Summer probably needed, for sure, but you know how they can be a bit pushy. We need to head home. Emmett is stuck in court, so I came to get you, since you rode in with him.”
Nodding, I shoved my hand through my hair. “Yeah, totally. I just need to talk to the boss. Give me a second.”
Turning toward the back, I waited for Brenda to walk out from the back office. I needed to run this past her.
