“You know,” Summer sat back in her seat, her eyes back on her own slice, “I think I get now why they told me you’d have your own pizza.”
We laughed while Emmett just shrugged, taking a bite of the foul stuff, which was radiating the scent of fish more and more.
Summer shook her head, but a smile played on her lips, so we knew she wasn’t truly mad. “I refuse to sit with that monstrosity. I’m with the others.” She laughed, picking up her plate and padding over to me.
Out of all the other alphas she could have walked over to, she chose me, which I knew was silly of me to be all excited about, but I couldn’t help it. My heart rate kicked up, and I did my best to stay calm and nonchalant while, inside, I was freaking out that the omega was coming so close. I was giddy, like one of my students, but it was true. I was crushing hard on our omega.
“May I?” she asked, nodding toward the empty space beside me.
I smiled brightly, shifting so she’d have even more room. “Of course, come get sanctuary from the crime against pizza—and nostrils.”
Her laugh was beautiful, and the next moment, she was sitting next to me, her leg pressed against mine. Heat rose through my body, and all I could think about was how good it felt to have her close, and whether she could hear how hard my heart was pounding.
Summer lifted her little slice and angled it toward me. “Cheers to normal pizza.”
I laughed, bumping the tip of mine against hers. “Cheers.”
“You’re missing out. It’s really good!” Emmett tried and failed to defend himself.
“No,” Marshall and Tobias said at the same time, and then we were all erupting into laughter.
Eventually, we were all stuffed, relaxing into our spots with bellies full of amazing, greasy pizza. And eventually, conversation turned back to the fact that Emmett had to return to work tomorrow, though none of us were excited about that part. If I had my way, I’d just stay with Summer all day every day.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay tomorrow, princess?” Emmett asked.
Summer nodded. “Of course. You can’t put everything on hold because of me. I’m used to being on my own. Milo and I can entertain ourselves easily. I don’t want you guys changing your lives because of us.”
“Of course our lives are going to change with you in it,” I said softly. “That’s how it works. That’s how we want it to work.”
She turned to me with a sweet smile. “I know that. I mean that we have plenty of time. I don’t need you taking time off from your jobs just because I’m settling in.”
“Only if you’re sure…” Marshall’s voice was firm.
“I’m a big girl. I can handle a day with my baby.”
“All right, and you know to call us if you need anything.” Emmett raised his brows at her.
“I do. We’re all set.” Turning again, Summer threw her legs up onto the couch and leaned back against me, her body warm and perfect. “For now, I want to stare at this fire and relax.”
“Sounds amazing,” I replied, grinning like a fool.
As conversation waned and the sun got lower and lower till it was gone, Summer dozed off on my chest, her breaths deep and slow. I didn’t dare move, and I looked up at Emmett.
“I get it now. I’m not moving for anything,” I whispered.
He smiled back at me, and I just sank deeper into the couch, watching the fire with my omega pressed against me.
Chapter 17
Summer
After another lovely breakfast where they all took turns offering to call out of work, I was left alone for the first extended period since coming to the pack house.
It was sweet; they all seemed anxious about leaving me alone, but truth be told, I was looking forward to a little time without them hovering.
The house was so quiet once the alphas left. It went from a bustling hub of activity, all of us talking and enjoying food to the sounds of Milo’s little grumbles, to silent in the blink of an eye. It hit me how used to the quiet I’d been back home, how different this place was, and I had to admit that I liked the bustle more than I expected.
“Okay my little toast monster, bath time, then we can decide what to do with our day!”
