“Smart man.”
The simmering fury in Natalia’s stomach began to boil when Wizard took his turn riding to the end of the runway.
Raci gave her a curious look. “Do you think Wizard will jump?”
“He’d better not.”
Wizard took off, and Natalia unconsciously rose to her feet. Sucking in a breath, she almost yelled for him not to jump but was too terrified that she might distract him and cause him to wreck.
He seemed to be going faster than Puck and Doom had. Every nerve in her body told her he was going to jump, and she was going to kill him if he survived.
Seconds ticked by as she waited to hear whether he had made it. At the victorious shout, she sank back onto the bench before her weakened knees gave out.
“Are you here with your husband?” she asked Raci once she could breathe again.
“No, I drove. Bender had to do a job for Wizard.”
“Would you mind giving me a ride home?”
Raci stared at her uncertainly. “Uh … I’ll have to ask Wizard for permission.”
Natalia nearly lost her temper at her answer. “You won’t have to. I’ll do it myself,” she said with mock sweetness.
“Okay. If Wizard says it’s fine, I don’t mind. I can’t stay much longer, anyway. My mother-in-law will be expecting me within the hour.”
“I need to have a short chat with Wizard. Then we can leave.”
Standing, she strode toward Doom. All The Last Riders in line watched as she walked between them to where he had parked his bike. Doom broke off his conversation with Puck when he noticed her.
“You come to see for yourself if Wizard survived?”
Her head turned when a headlight swept over the three of them. Twisting back toward Doom, she focused on him. “Does Arden know you make that jump?”
The smile dropped from Doom’s face. “I don’t need her permission to make the jump, or to do anything else,” he stated coldly.
“Answer the question. Does she know?”
His lips tightened. “No, she doesn’t.”
Wizard brought his motorcycle to a stop and immediately sensed the tension between Doom and her. He cut the engine. “What’s up?”
Natalia turned toward him. “I was asking Doom if Arden knew he was doing the Devil’s Jump. Doom told me he didn’t need his wife’s permission. What I’d like to know is why Raci needs your permission to drive me home”—her escalating voice nearly drowned out another rider making a run for the jump—“but Doom, who is a married man who just risked life and limb for fun, doesn’t need his wife’s permission?”
Wizard gave her a crooked smile. “What Doom tells his wife is his business. What you do is mine.”
“What I want to do is none of your business. I can do anything I want, with or without your approval.” Planting her hands on his handlebars, she glared at him furiously.
“Not if it involves another Last Rider. What does it matter, anyway? If you want to leave, I’ll take you back.”
“Because I want to get away from you idiotas!” she practically screamed in his face. “And, so you’re fully aware, I would never marry a man who wouldn’t tell his wife that he risked his life for a stupid stunt.”
“I agree.” Wizard immediately sent Doom a censuring look. “He should have. I’ll talk to him.”
“You’d better!” Straightening, she released the handlebars. “Now, I’m leaving with Raci. I don’t know why she wants to hang out with you guys, anyway, considering the way she’s been ostracized.”
Spinning toward where Raci waited beside her car, she left the men staring after her.
“Why were you yelling at Wizard?” Raci whispered once they were inside the car.
