“I’m not the type of man to get down on one knee to propose.”
“I’m the type of woman who wants all the bells and whistles, so I guess you didn’t take that into consideration when you made your list. Why don’t you add it to your preferences and pick some other woman?”
He gave her a wink. “I believe in equality. You could always propose to me on bended knee.”
“Hell will have to freeze over first,” she scoffed.
“Don’t say anything you might regret later. I’m just putting it out there so you’ll keep me in mind while you’re searching for more duds to date.”
“We going to jump tonight, Wizard?” Doom yelled from a nearby group. “Or did we just come here to shoot the shit?”
“Who wants to go first?” Wizard shouted back to the waiting crowd.
“It’s my turn.” Puck climbed onto his bike.
Wizard turned back to her. “There are some benches beside the office. You can watch from there.”
“You aren’t going to do anything illegal, are you? The last thing I need right now is to get arrested.”
He grinned at her. “The owner lets us hang out here. You’re safe.”
“What if an airplane comes in?”
“There won’t be one.”
At his assurance, she joined the women as they made their way to the seating area. Curious, she watched as the men formed a long line on their motorcycles.
“Hi.” A pretty woman took a seat next to her. “I haven’t seen you here before. I’m Raci.”
“Natalia,” she responded to the friendly overture.
Raci tugged off her jacket. “I saw you riding with Wizard. I’m Bender’s old lady.”
The roar of a motorcycle drew their gazes toward the sound. The sight of Puck speeding down the lighted runway made Natalia’s mouth drop open.
“What’s he doing?” she gasped.
“Just watch,” Raci told her.
Flabbergasted, Natalia watched as Puck rode faster, his motorcycle becoming a blur until it flew into the air.
Had Puck just committed suicide in front of her?
A loud shout from someone standing near where Puck had jumped drew her gaze from the dark sky where he had disappeared.
“He made it!”
“Yay!” all the women shouted.
Horrified by what she had witnessed, Natalia nearly threw up. “Do they have death wishes?”
“No.” Raci patted her arm. “They call it the Devil’s Race. If they think they can make the jump, they go for it. If not, they don’t.”
“Has anyone ever been killed?”
“Of course not. Bender did come close, though. He had to wear a body cast for twelve weeks after he crashed.”
“How far is the drop if they don’t make it?”
