Harrison frowned.

Once could be coincidence. Three times was enough to make him start asking questions.

He opened the Hull report first, then his phone vibrated against the desk and his heart gave one ridiculous, instinctive jolt. For the briefest moment, before he’d even looked at the screen, he expected to see Jake’s name.

It wasn’t him.

Oddly, that might have been a relief.

He answered, rubbing the ache from his eyes. “Missing rainy Yorkshire already, Nell?”

“At least Yorkshire has scenery.” Her dry amusement crackled down the line. “And if I remember rightly, some of that scenery was about six foot, shirtless, and repairing your roof.”

A smile tugged at Harrison’s mouth. “Can’t deny the scenery is rather impressive.”

“The moors or the roofer?”

He looked down at his paperwork, unable to stop the smile. “Both.”

She laughed. “Well?”

“Well, what?”

“Don’t play innocent. Has the scenery become… more accessible?”

Harrison rested his head against the back of his chair. “It’s progressed.”

“That sounds promising.”

“And also… complicated.”

“I’ll expect the full story at some point.”

He glanced through the blinds into the darkened CID office. “Not now.”

“I hope that’s because the roof still needs fixing rather than because it’s collapsed completely.”

“I’d appreciate it if we could pretend this call has another purpose.”

She turned serious. “Unfortunately, it does.”

The change in her voice made him straighten. “What is it?”

“I didn’t want you hearing this through Professional Standards.”

Harrison pinched the bridge of his nose. “Go on.”

“Mack called me this afternoon.”

Jesus. Mack. One of Chris’s old firearms lot. “About what?”

“The Falcon operation.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

Rain ticked steadily against the office window. Somewhere deeper in the station, a printer started whining into life, paper feeding through in uneven bursts.

“You still there?” Nigella asked quietly.
