“You’re a what now?”
Chapter 9
Connor
Ihad to have heard him wrong.
He didn’t just tell me he was a werewolf. One, werewolves didn’t exist. And two, well… werewolves didn’t exist.
Was this a midlife crisis? Had he had a mental breakdown and was currently locked in his closet, pulling out his hair?
“Pardon me,” I said. “But can you repeat that?”
He blew out a long breath. “I think I might just show you,” he said as he stood. He towered over me now, and my face was level with his crotch. This was a position I could get used to. My eyes were trained on the zipper of his jeans, and while I wasn’t usually the type to throw myself at a man, the opportunity was right there. And I kind of wanted to. Jack was irresistible. I wanted to nuzzle against him and soak up his touch. I bet he was warm.
A low growl sounded from his lips, and I snapped my gaze up to his.
“I don’t know what you’re thinking right now, Connor, but your scent is intoxicating. It’s driving me insane. Table that idea for now. Can you stand?”
I didn’t want to. I wanted to act out my wildest fantasy and unzip his pants and see if the size of his cock matched the breadth of his shoulders.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to happen. Mostly because he was going through something, and I really didn’t need to throw myself at him. I needed to find out what he meant by werewolf. Maybe that was a new name for a bear? Though he was a little too lean to be considered a bear.
He helped me to my feet. I was shorter than him, but not by much.
“Before I show you what I’m talking about, can I kiss you? You might run away screaming, and I need to have kissed you at least once before you do that.”
I licked my lips, my body growing hot with desire. A kiss was easy. Hell, he could asked for a lot more if he wanted. A kiss was just the beginning. If it were up to me, we wouldn’t stop there.
I went up on my tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his lips.
I knew it would be hot. Everything about him screamed sexy, alpha-type. A man who would take charge and leave me breathless. I just didn’t realize how hot it could be.
My whole body heated when his lips touched mine, and when he coaxed my mouth open with his tongue, his taste fueled a fire within me that sent tingles down my spine. Individual shocks went to the tips of each of my fingers and toes, and I melted into him. My hands went to his chest, and my palms pressed against his pecs. He breathed me in as he pulled me tighter against him. My hips were flush with his, and I knew he was feeling the same as me, either that or he had something in his pocket.
I moaned into his lips. Subtle and demure were not what I was aiming for this evening. I wanted him, and I needed him to know it.
Then his hands were on my shoulders, but instead of pulling me closer, he was pushing me away.
The kiss broke, and I staggered back.
Jack’s shoulders heaved, and he held up his hand. “Stay back, Connor. I don’t want to hurt you.” His voice called to something within me. He was pained and scared.
“Jack, what is it?” I made a move toward him, but he scrambled backward down the deck steps and on to the lawn. His hands fisted at his sides, and he doubled over like he was in pain.
He dropped to his knees in the grass, and his hands hit the ground. Only they weren’t hands… and he wasn’t totally human anymore. Where his flannel was before was now tattered remains, and his body was covered in fur.
“Jack?” I gasped. A strangled cry nearly escaped my lips.
Standing there in a tangle of jeans and the flannel that Jack had been wearing just moments ago was a wolf.
A large, grayish-brown wolf with forlorn eyes that spoke to my soul.
Werewolf.
He was telling the truth.
“Jack?” My voice was quieter now, and despite the fact that the man I was just kissing was not a man anymore, I stepped closer.
