“It’s just a date, right? Nothing else?”
“Of course, prostitution is technically illegal in this state.”
“I go to the auction, take off my shirt, someone bids on me, and I go on one date with them, is that it then?”
“Unless you mutually agree to a second date, of course.”
“That is not going to happen.”
I tried not to feel relieved by his adamance.
“Great, so you’ll be in the auction?”
“Is that my only option?”
“Yep.” I purposely popped the P at the end because I knew it annoyed him.
“And if I agree to be in the auction, you’ll fix my hip?”
“You know as well as I do that I can’t make guarantees, Robbie.”
“Fine, but if I do the auction, you’ll treat me?”
“You also have to do the required publicity for the event.”
He winced.
“Fine. When is the event?”
“The Saturday after the Super Bowl.”
After being raised in a football family, I measured every date in relation to football season, whether I meant to or not.
He nodded.
“I’ll be there with my ring on then.”
I couldn’t decide if I was surprised that he’d agreed or not. Maybe he thought he’d weasel his way out of it later.
“I’ll schedule your appointments after I receive your headshot and bio from your publicist so we can put it on the website.”
“Aw Vi, you don’t trust me still?”
“Hell no.”
Although something was nagging at me now. Remembering back to how shy Robbie had been about asking me out, it suddenly seemed unfathomable that he’d invited that girl up to his room. The guy had no game, at least off the field, and he’d seemed generally clueless about the effect he had on women.

Twenty years ago...
“Who are you?”
The girl sat up, squinting against the overhead light that I’d turned on, bringing Robbie’s bedroom into brightness. She had long blonde hair, tangled from sleep, long legs, and a body like a super model. Next to her, I felt fat and frumpy.
“I’m Robbie’s new girlfriend,” she said, giving me a Cheshire cat smile.
My heart stuttered.
