“You still didn’t tell us your ideal type.”

“I told you I don’t have one.”

“I don’t believe that.”

He was halfway to his feet, but at that, he slowly lowered himself back into his seat.

“Why?” he asked calmly. He wasn’t looking at me, his gaze remained fixed on the table. “Why are you so interested in this, Miss Reporter?”

My face briefly twisted at the new title he had given me, but I composed myself and smiled again.

“Isn’t it obvious? Because you’re my celebrity crush.”

“Oh, Ms. Bozwell!” the man at the table gasped, but I didn’t even flush. With zero shame, I locked my eyes directly on his.

Would acting this clingy disgust him? Would he see through the act? Would he realize I was only doing it to get closer to him?

He blinked slowly, his brows arching in surprise. “Me?”

I nodded eagerly. “If I find out what your ideal type is, I can change myself to fit it.”

“You don’t have to.”

His immediate answer brought an unbidden smile to my lips. “Does that mean you’d love me just as I am?”

“It means I’m not interested in love.”

“There must’ve been someone once. Someone you gave your heart to…”

“I had no one. I have no one. I prefer solitude.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think you do. I believe there’s a gentle side to you. No, I know there is.”

I hadn’t planned on saying that. My cheeks burned. When it came to him, I always found myself doing things I normally never would.

I wished I hadn’t.

“I won’t pretend for your comfort, miss. Whatever you’ve convinced yourself of, I’d let it go, if I were you.”

“You call me delusional?” I let out a mocking laugh, masking my hurt tone.

“I’m just saying facing the reality is an essential. For your own sake.”

“Oh, reality? What about you, sir? If you can’t return to reality, what would you do to comfort yourself, I wonder?”

As I expected, his jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing. I knew he had no answer, so I leaned closer until our faces were inches apart.

“Poor man.” I whispered. “What will you do now? Go home and kill one of my clones again?” My amused expression faded, I glowered at him. “Well, that’s your reality.”

I quickly grabbed my bag and rose to my feet, shoving my chair back. I pushed past anyone who got in my way, continuing to walk without even apologizing. Feeling my eyes well up, I wanted to slap myself. I blinked rapidly, my head was spinning, the ground was falling away from under my feet. When I reached Prisne with quick steps, I congratulated myself.

My friend stood up when our eyes met. “How did it go?”

“Yunna hasn’t contacted you yet?”

“No. You’re okay? What happened?”

“If Yunna comes, send me a signal.” I left her at the counter and walked toward the outer doors. When I stepped out into the street, I let the tears flow.
