“Happy birthday, baby momma,” he said teasingly. “What do you want to do today? I have one surprise—”

“Chance! No, no surprises. I beg you. I do not want to cuss you out today.”

He chuckled. “Fine. Even though I don’t mind you cussing me out any day; since it’s your birthday and I don’t want you to stress my baby out, I’ll tell you.”

He told me we were going to Jamie’s mom’s house for dinner. They insisted on her house, and Diane wanted to officially meet Chance. He explained that before dinner tonight, we had plans at Kings Spa in Chantilly, Virginia.

Now, that was a surprise I wouldn’t have been mad at. I squealed and tiptoed, showering him with kisses on his face. He held my waist and pulled me close, pressing my stomach against him. His tender kiss made me think about having a quickie before our day began.

It was as if we had the same thought because lust consumed his eyes. He moved us to the sofa in his office and sat down, and the next thing I knew, I was riding him in reverse cowgirl until we came together.

After showering, dressing, and getting ready, we went to the spa. Since it was about an hour away, I made sure to bring plenty of snacks and water.

Jamie’s mom lived in Alexandria, so on our way home we could just stop there before heading home. I was excited for the spa and to see her, but I was also already feeling overwhelmed and tired. I just hoped this spa would do the trick and relax every single muscle I possessed.

When we entered the spa, the scenery was beautiful and breathtaking. The entrance had warm lighting; it felt very clean and had a modern Korean spa aesthetic. It was welcoming, spacious, and calming. After we checked in, we went to the sauna area; it felt like we entered another world. There were pink salted bricks as the wall itself. It was absolutely peaceful. We spent forty minutes in there before heading to the indoor pool. The outdoor pool area was closed from Labor Day until it reopened on Memorial Day.

The indoor pool gave a tranquil vibe; warm water, cascading waterfalls, and lush greenery set the perfect relaxing mood as we floated in the pool together. After we finished swimming, we ended our session with a 60-minute foot massage. I think I dozed off twice. One thing was for sure, I was definitely more relaxed than when I entered. We made plans to come back in the summertime. Chance purchased yearly passes for both of us, and then we left.

When we got in the car, my phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered.

“You have a collect call from an inmate, Niecy, from Cumberland Prison. Press one to accept this call.”

“Justice?”

“Niecy! Oh, my God, girl. How have you been? Why did it take you so long to call me, bitch,” I said, excited; I felt Chance’s eyes on me.

I had told him about our friendship and the one time we had accidentally scissored. What could I say, we were vulnerable. That was all it was. I told him that it was nothing to worry about, but I did tell him that I missed our friendship and how disappointed I was that she hadn’t called.

“Awww, you miss me,” she teased. “I missed you too. You know I hate calling people. I knew you were trying to rebuild your life, but I couldn’t miss calling you for your birthday. I called the number you gave me, and your sister gave me your number.”

“Girl, we are locked in. Call any time. You were a huge part of me not losing my shit in there. I can’t wait until you’re released. We gon’ have a time.”

We laughed and caught up. I shared everything about what I’d been up to, but I left out the drama with Chase because calls were recorded. Before the operator disconnected our call, she mentioned she had been called to reclass, and although she wasn’t coming home soon, they did knock off two years. So, instead of being released in 2033 should could be home in 2030. I told her to keep me updated and to let me know if she needed anything.

“Damn, Trouble. You don’t smile like that when I call you?” Chance teased.

“Shut up, sir. You know you, my man. ’Til death do us part.”

He smirked, “Yeah, okay. Remember you said that.”

One hour later, we pulled up to Diane’s house, and I was ready to enjoy my time with my family over a good meal.

Chance got out first, as usual, opened my door, and helped me out of the car.

Knock. Knock.

“Coming,” I heard Jamie say from the other side of the door.

When she opened the door, I saw a bunch of pink and blue balloons. I cut my eyes towards Chance.

“I thought you said no surprises.”

“I told you everything we were doing today. I just didn’t mention the balloon thing because that wasn’t my idea.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me inside. “Now, let’s see what your sister has graciously put together for you.”

I knew he knew more than what he was suggesting, but I think he found a loophole. He made the plans, and she carried them out. They thought they were slick.
