“I don’t know yet. I’ll let you know.”

I wasn’t in no rush to go over there and sit around listening to my father talk shit. My mama was cool for the most part, but she had her moments, too. Sometimes I couldn’t understand why she went along with half the shit my father did. I loved both of them, but that didn’t mean I always wanted to be around their asses.

“Aight, well, let me know,” he said before walking out.

I didn’t bother responding. I watched him leave, still thinking about what he’d said concerning David.

No sooner than the door closed, it opened again, and Kendric walked in. He glanced over his shoulder before shutting the door behind him.

“What the hell was that about?”

“Man, some bullshit, per usual.” I dragged my hand down my face.

Kendric chuckled as he took a seat across from me. “Don’t surprise me.”

“Nah, not at all.” I leaned back in my chair. “What’s up with you, though? You good?”

“Yeah, I’m straight. Just came to see what you had going on.” He settled into the chair. “And I meant to tell you, that food from last night was good as fuck. You need to keep shorty around for real.”

I laughed. “Oh, believe me, I plan to.”

I wasn’t about to sit up here and say I was falling for Kaylen. It was way too early for all that. But I liked having her around, even with that smart ass mouth of hers. My house had always been quiet, and I’d never had a problem with that until she came along.

Now I was getting used to hearing her moving around, talking shit, and making herself comfortable.

I wasn’t putting a name on whatever the fuck that was just yet, but I damn sure wasn’t in a hurry for her to leave.

“Good, but you think you can get her sister’s number for me, though?”

I raised my eyebrow at Kendric. “Hell nah.”

“Nigga, why not?”

“Because I ain’t about to let your ass fuck nothing up for me.”

He frowned. “Who said I was gonna fuck something up?”

“Bruh, I know how you are. The moment you do some bullshit to her sister, Kaylen gone be on my ass about it. Nah, I’m good.”

Kaylen already gave me enough hell on her own. I didn’t need Kendric adding to that shit.

“Man, you can’t be a fucking gatekeeper.”

“Ain’t nobody gatekeeping shit. I’m telling you to handle your own business.”

“So you can’t even put in a good word for your boy?”

I shook my head. “Look at it from my standpoint. What if me and Kaylen end up building something, and you do some stupid shit to her sister? Now she mad at me because I’m the one who hooked y’all up.”

Kendric started laughing. “Nigga, what makes you think she gone wanna fuck with you on that level anyway?”

“You never know.” I shrugged.

“Whatever, bruh.” He leaned back in his chair, shaking his head. “You acting like I’m some kind of problem.”

“Sometimes your ass is.”

He laughed, and I went back to what I was doing. We talked for a few more minutes before another knock came at my door.
