She glanced at my phone before looking back at me. “So that man is really looking for me?”
“Looks that way.”
She stared down at her plate for a few seconds. “Why?”
“That's what I'm trying to find out.”
“And you think he's the one who had that truck following me?”
“I think it's possible. I don't know that for a fact yet.”
I had my suspicions, but I wasn’t about to scare her with some shit I couldn’t prove.
Shakaylen pushed her plate away slightly. “So what am I supposed to do? Just stay locked up in your house while you figure it out?”
“Nobody said shit about locking you up.”
Her head snapped in my direction. “Nigga, you literally locked me in a fucking room!”
I pressed my lips together, fighting the laugh that wanted to come out.
“That's different.”
“How the fuck is that different?”
“You kept running.”
“I wasn't running! I was leaving!”
“Without knowing who the fuck was outside waiting on you.”
“Because I didn't know somebody was following me!”
“And now you do.”
She stared at me like she wanted to reach across the island and slap the shit out of me. I let her look all she wanted.
“And before you start,” I continued, “I'm not saying you gotta stay locked in this house. But until I know what David's got going on, yo' ass ain't moving around like everything is normal either.”
Her eyes narrowed. “You don't get to make that decision for me.”
I leaned back against the counter and folded my arms across my chest.
“We'll see.”
“Cassian.”
“What?”
“I swear to God, you get on my fucking nerves.”
A grin pulled at my mouth. “You ain't exactly a walk in the park either, shorty.”
She rolled her eyes and went back to eating.
“Whatever.”
I laughed. “Now it's whatever because I flipped the shit on you?”
