I sucked my teeth and tried my best not to move, even though the hot comb was already making the back of my neck sweat.
“Just please don’t burn me, because I don’t need Caine thinking a burn spot is a hickey like the last time that happened.”
Rochelle paused for half a second, then burst into laughter.
“Girl, okay. Because I’m sure that nigga will shoot up whole entire blocks over your ass.”
“Girl, no he won’t.” I laughed it off.
“I’m serious Kharti. It’s the way he looks at you, especially when he’s snatching your ass up from somewhere. I can tell that nigga doesn’t play about his Kharti.”
She caught my eye in the mirror, grinning as she ran the hot comb through another section.
It was true, and Caine had snatched me up from a few places since we’d been together, because I was learning what I could and couldn’t do being married to him.
I remember when he first snatched me up out of this party I went to at Rochelle’s homegirl house. Caine had been on the north side all day handling business, so I rode over to the party with Rochelle because she invited me after doing my hair one day. When Caine told me that he was on his way home and I replied that I was at a kickback in the Franklin Court apartments, he got off the phone like nothing was wrong.
At least I thought nothing was wrong until his ass showed up in a muscle shirt and used his wide ass shoulders to part the crowd and stand over me.
“What the fuck you hanging out at a kickback for Kharti? You trying to get kidnapped for ransom or some shit?”
I remember my ass started stuttering, but Caine quickly cut that short by grabbing my arm and leading me out of the party in front of everyone, whispering and watching.
I remember being confused as hell about why I couldn’t be at a kickback in my old hood until Caine explained that being with him made my entire body gold, and that gold ain’t cheap, so therefore niggas always want their hands on it. I was embarrassed by the way he pulled me out of that party until Rochelle did my hair that next week and talked about how sexy it was that he came and got me. Every other stylist and client in the shop agreed and even shared stories of their own about getting snatched up by their nigga. Caine was my first hood nigga so safe to say I was still learning.
“Speaking of your boo, have you thrown your girl in the game yet?”
She took the hot comb through another section of my hair.
“In the game with who? Duke?”
Rochelle's eyebrows lifted in the mirror.
“Yeah, with Duke. I been telling you I wanted his fine ass since my cousin that works at Spades said she saw that nigga taking a piss outside the back of the club one night and that his dick was the size of a turkey leg. And not them little ones either. I’m talking about fully stuffed.”
I burst out laughing at her dramatic ass.
“Girl, you do not want them problems in your life. Trust me.
“And why not? He’s fine, I’m sure he’s paid too, even though he drives that loud ass truck, and I know that dick is good. I can tell by the way his ass walks.”
I saw in the mirror that she was biting her bottom lip and squeezing her thighs together.
I mean, I get it, Duke is fine like all of the other Essex men, but he wasn't the kind of man you casually introduced into somebody's life. Men like him didn't knock before entering nor ask permission for anything. I wasn’t that close with my brother in law, but I’d heard and saw enough to know what kind of person he is.
“Rochelle, you are crazy, but we will see if the opportunity ever presents itself. Me and him don’t really talk like that. Brother in law or not.”
“Well, hopefully one day Caine is my brother in law, and we are sisters more than we are now. Taking trips out of the country and shit together so I can hang up this apron.”
She spun my chair around to face her.
“Please don't hang it up. Your hands are a blessing to my hair.”
“Well, I’m glad to be girlfriend, but I am done with your head for now, so let me get my camera and get some photos real quick for insta.”
Rochelle grabbed her phone off the charger stand beside her and started flicking pics, turning my head from side to side by my chin to find the right camera angles. My phone buzzed in my lap, and I glanced down at the screen.
"Girl, let me hurry and go outside and talk to this man. He just pulled up on me."
