“No.”
“Bryn.”
“Kick.”
“Which one?”
She rolled her eyes. “How would I know?”
I crouched anyway, my ear pressed against her stomach. Two heartbeats, fast, perfect. The boy kicked again, at least I assumed it was him. He seemed violent, probably takes after me. The girl was calmer, must take after Bryn. Actually, no. Bryn was not calm. Maybe we were fucked if they get our tempers.
I kissed her stomach. “Stop hurting your mother.”
Bryn snorted. “They're babies.”
“They understand.”
“They have ears, Viking. Not military training.”
“Yet.”
She groaned. “God help me.”
I smiled against her stomach. Then I stood and slid my arm around her. “Come on.”
“Where?”
“Kitchen.”
“I was going to the garden.”
“You were going to the garden without shoes.”
“Because someone kidnapped them.”
“Kitchen first.”
“Why?”
“You haven't eaten in two hours.” She stared at me.
“How do you know that?”
“I checked.” Her mouth opened, I knew immediately I'd fucked up.
“You checked.”
“Poor word choice.”
“You checked?”
“Bryn.”
“With who?”
I considered lying but that was a bad idea. “Kosta.”
Her face went blank. Fuck. “Kosta is reporting when I eat now?”
