"If she survives. I'm not sure she will, Tyler," she said, feeling suddenly exhausted. "What now? Should we go back to the safe house?" She wasn't thrilled about that idea. While it was likely the drugs in Jack's system had worn off, and he was no longer dangerous, it would take a while for her to feel comfortable around him.

"Let me call Evan." He punched in a number and let the call play through the car's audio system.

"Hello," Evan answered.

"It's Tyler. Am I on speaker? Are you sitting with Jack?"

"No, he's sleeping. I'm in the kitchen."

"Okay. How's it going there?" Tyler asked.

"Better. Jack went through an hour or so where he felt nauseous. He threw up once and was sweating like it was a hundred degrees in the house. Then he started to shiver. I was getting worried and was about to call you when his condition began to improve."

"That's the withdrawal," Tyler said.

"I figured. I've been trying to ask him questions and write down the answers. Sometimes, he's clear. Other times, he's confused. He isn't sure if he's remembering what happened or what he was dreaming about. But he was definitely being asked questions about our missions and operational teams. He remembers names being mentioned, not just Mei Zheng, but others too. And he believes they asked him about all of us. What's going on with you? Did you find that doctor you were looking for?"

"Yes," he said. "But Dr. Prescott was brutally stabbed. If we hadn't gotten to her place right after it happened, she would have bled out on the floor. As it is, she's in critical condition."

"That's rough. I'm guessing you want me to keep that piece of information to myself."

"Yes. I think Jack had something personal going on with this doctor, and I don't want to upset him."

"Did she tell you what's going on?"

"Bits and pieces. I think they started moving evidence out of Waverly when Jack disappeared. We need to find the warehouse where he was taken. All the evidence we need is probably off-site now. That's what I need you to focus on when he wakes up. Any clues that will get us to that location could be critical to bringing this operation down."

"I'll keep talking to him," Evan promised.

"If you need to get home, I can arrange for someone to come and stay with Jack."

"I already called Gary. He'll be here at six and stay until tomorrow morning. Then I'll come back. I hope that's okay. Gary wants to help."

"If Jack is okay with it, I'm okay with it."

"I told Jack it was either Gary or an FBI agent, and he chose Gary."

"No surprise there. Thanks for doing that."

"No problem. Watch your back."

"I will."

"It sounds like Jack is getting better," Rachel said as Tyler disconnected. "Do you think Gary is okay to stay with him tonight? Do you need to be there?"

"Gary can handle Jack."

She was happy to hear that answer. "So, we don't need to go back there?"

He met her gaze. "I wasn't going to take you back there, Rachel."

She drew in a shaky breath, seeing the compassion in his eyes. "I know he's probably fine now."

"Doesn't matter. You're not going back there, and I'm not going to leave you alone."

"Are we going to your condo then?"

"I'm thinking somewhere else. Maybe a nice hotel, with room service and a minibar."
