The Berlin show passes in a frantic, feverish blur. It’s one of their biggest venues yet, an industrial-feeling metal-and-glass arena with a labyrinthine backstage area and toilet stalls covered in pride stickers and protest flyers. The crowd here seems louder than in all the other cities. The sound is like a shot of pure dopamine straight to Florence’s veins, leaving her buzzing long after they leave the stage. She can’t stop grinning as they get changed or as they are led to their seats in the venue to watch Juno. Her set is familiar by now; singing and dancing along to it with the rest of the band holds all the comfort of slipping into a well-worn sweater. Florence’s favorite part is watching Luca, eyes shimmering traitorously amid an ocean of phone torches during the saddest songs.

When they get back to the hostel, Florence is too keyed up to even think about lying down. Walking up to Luca where she’s crouched on the floor rifling through her overnight bag, she asks, “Are you tired yet?”

“No,” Luca says immediately.

“I thought,” Florence says, “maybe we could go out?”

“Out out?”

“No. Just . . . to go for a walk. You went running by the river yesterday, right?”
