I could see the same image on Fiona’s phone as everyone looked around, confused.
Mrs. O’Leary was on the microphone again. “Sorry, technical difficulties.”
The town square was buzzing. My mom and Marcus were wondering if it was an advertisement from one of the thrift stores in town or someplace like that.
The screen went black again, someone rebooting the system. Fiona swiped away the image on her screen and then leaned back in her chair, giving me an innocent look.
“How did you do that?” I asked quietly.
“They should really turn off the screen mirroring capabilities on their equipment.”
“I don’t know if anyone took pictures of that one to share like your last art installment.”
“I’m sure there was at least one picture.” She smiled.
Marcus looked at me suspiciously as Fiona finally accepted her drink from me.
That you? he mouthed.
Not me, I responded.
He didn’t seem to believe me. Did he think I lied about everything now? It felt like a little wedge was forming between us. I didn’t like that at all.
Chapter 26
We were halfway through the movie when Mom looked at her phone and whispered, “Oh no.”
“What?” I asked, worried. Had someone texted her about me and Ryan?
Mom stood up. “Momma’s car won’t start. She needs a jump.”
I let out a breath. Why was I so focused on myself?
“I’ll help,” Marcus said, already standing and folding his chair.
“This is the good part,” Harris said.
“I’ll stay,” I said. “With Harris. Will you come back when you’re done?”
“The movie will probably be over by then,” Marcus said, bagging his chair.
“Okay,” I said.
“I can give Jasmine and Harris a ride home,” Fiona said.
“Thank you,” Mom said. “Stay with your sister.” She looked pointedly at Harris.
“I will,” he said.
“Shhhh!” someone hissed from behind us.
“Sorry,” Mom called. “Jess’s car won’t start.”
“You need help?” someone else asked from the other side.
“We got it, thanks,” Marcus said.
Mom and Marcus left, weaving through chairs. Then they were walking by the hot cocoa trailer and saying something to Will. And then they were gone.
