‘Fox,’ she said, turning towards him, close in the circle of his arms and still unable to see. She tilted her face upwards and he could see the freckles on her nose under the mask. It would be so easy to drop his mouth to hers, to crush her to his chest. Instead, he untied the strings of the mask and peeled it away, uncovering her eyes, which gleamed at him in the nightclub lights. She rested her hands on his chest, and he glanced down at her body in that outfit. Her high breasts were spilling out of her top and the smooth skin on her shoulders shone with glitter. He felt himself growing hard, half of him wanting to step away and the other half wanting to hold her so tight she couldn’t escape.

‘Having fun?’ Fox asked even though her smile was telling him the answer.

‘Want to dance?’ she asked in reply.

He hesitated, then shook his head, thinking about the hard-on in his jeans that she would be pressing against. There’d be no hiding it, that’s for sure.

‘You don’t want to dance with me?’

‘Oh, but I do.’ She reached her hand out to him, beckoning him on.

He hesitated for one last second and took a deep breath before sliding his fingers into hers. Her grin felt like a prize as she led him out to the dance floor to join in with the chaos.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Robyn

The dance floor was packed, and Robyn tugged Fox right into the middle of the crowd, where the disco lights flashed through dry ice, so that it felt like they were in a world of their own. Just like they had been the first night they met.

That night, he’d reached behind for her hand as they’d neared the dance floor and she had slipped her fingers into his. Smiling over his shoulder, he’d pressed forward into the crowd, his fingers tightening on hers to keep them together. He needn’t have worried. Robyn hadn’t been planning on going anywhere else.

It had been the most fun she’d had in ages. Something about him was so attractive. Not just the way he looked or smelled – God, the smell of him – but his positive energy, his interest in her. The little things he’d done over the evening had all drawn her in, from his genuine pleasure at her wins on the game, the casual yet confident way he pulled out her bar stool for her, the fact he insisted on buying the drinks. He’d even stopped to stroke the hotel dog in the foyer. Looking at him had filled her with a strange sense of optimism, of connection, of something real. And every time he looked at her, she just wanted to smile.

They’d found a gap on the dance floor and they’d started to move, perfectly in rhythm, the crowd swelling around them, pressing them ever closer together, until finally he’d rested his hand on her hip and pulled her in. The contact was like an electric current. She’d felt the flicker of real desire in her belly, and smiled to see the darkening of his eyes. Clearly, he felt the same. She’d put her free hand in the air and danced on, her eyes closed, her face turned up to the lights, and let herself go.

Now, Fox’s cowboy hat was hanging down his back on the string round his neck, his shirt was open an extra button or two and that big buckled belt he was wearing on his jeans was like a magnet. She wanted to hook her hands over it and pull him closer, but he took the lead before she had a chance to grab on.

Holding one of her hands in his own against his chest, he encircled her waist with the other, his fingers splayed across her lower back leaving tingles where he touched her bare skin. Fox swayed her to the music, and then spun her in a circle.

‘I remember your moves, Silver007.’

He turned her, and pulled her back towards him, before dipping her to the side so that her hair hung down towards the floor. She laughed as he flipped her back upright.

‘And?’ Fox quirked an eyebrow. ‘How are they, Red?’

She loved the playfulness on his face, the way his eyes creased as he smiled. ‘Just as good as they were the first time,’ she said, remembering again how they’d danced to a DJ, hands in the air, until his had found their way around her waist and then didn’t let her go for the rest of the night.

The arm around her now flexed and tightened and he was drawing her closer in, until she was crushed to his chest. She snaked her free hand up and round his neck as they moved. She pushed her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck, remembering the surprising softness of the silver.

Fox shifted his position, pushing his thigh between hers, right up to the top where her miniskirt ended, swaying her side to side so that she ground against him. Robyn gasped at the heat of it, the feel of his leg, muscular under the denim as he rubbed against the softness of her inner thigh.

‘I remember it all,’ she said then, moving her mouth closer to his ear so that he could hear her above the music. He smelled of sandalwood and tequila and it sent shockwaves straight to her core. His eyes were the colour of cognac as he slowed his dancing to look at her.

‘I remember it too,’ Fox said and his voice was rough. His eyes were searching hers, and the anticipation made her breath catch. He shifted position again and Robyn thought her legs might actually buckle as he held her against him, hot and hard in his jeans.

She felt him there, against her lower stomach, and pushed towards him, craving more pressure, more friction. She wanted to be naked, alone and riding him. Robyn wrapped her fingers into his hair more tightly and tugged, making his chin lift as he held her gaze. Their eyes were locked on each other, and the rest of the dance floor might as well have been deserted. She was breathless with wanting.

‘CONGA!’ Walker shouted, jostling Robyn to the left, and the contact was broken.

Their friends waved from the line of people, drunkenly dancing, as they appeared through the neon lights and Gabi grabbed at Fox as they passed, telling him to join in. Fox and Robyn were wrenched apart.

‘Wait for me at the end,’ he shouted to her. ‘We can walk home together.’

She nodded, wishing that it was now. But then the conga turned another corner and the hand that held hers was torn away.

Wren and Rosie decided to leave at the same time as Robyn and Fox, and the four of them walked home together. Well, Robyn, Fox and Wren walked. Rosie weaved and swayed and sang old Oasis tracks. The couple finally said goodbye on the corner and turned down their road, leaving Robyn alone with Fox to walk the last few minutes. They could hear Rosie singing right up until the moment they shut their front door.

‘D’you think Rosie is letting her hair down before the babies come by any chance?’ Fox asked as they turned towards Honeybridge House. Robyn wrapped her arms around herself to keep warm.
