“For what?”
“A high.”
My eyebrows pull into the middle of my forehead.
A blonde head of hair catches my attention by the church doors, followed by Blake and Asher, who have neon cross masks perched on the top of their heads.
“Is that…” I start, tugging on the handle. Music and laughter fills my eardrums, while the stench of weed overwhelms me, it’s like it’s been amped up by a million. I hurry towards the stairs. “Cassie?”
Her bright blue eyes lock with mine and I almost melt at the sight of her. Her short blonde hair is brushed up into a ponytail and she’s sporting an oversized jumper with leggings, definitely standing out against all these costumes.
“Jordie!” she squeals, pulling me into a tight hug. “Where the hell have you been? I’ve been so worried about you!” Her shaky voice is muffled against my neck—it makes my own throat tighten with emotion.
“I missed you so much,” I manage to force out.
We spin slowly in a circle, holding onto each other as if someone’s about to rip us away again. Something hard presses into my stomach as I draw her in closer.
“No one would tell me where you were, and Kain—he tried so hard—”
Kain’s throat clears, causing us to reluctantly break apart. My hands are shaking as I grip her jumper, blinking back tears.
“Cassie.” He nods.
“Kain.” She beams. “How are you?”
He doesn’t reply. Instead, he side-leans against the pillar Blake is currently resting on. Ripping my eyes away from Kain’s, I face Cassie again. All the while my skin prickles with his intense gaze. I notice a small bump protruding from her jumper, and I refrain from the gasp that wants to escape. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but the oversized clothes, the hard bump… it makes my stomach twist.
“Remind me again why this was a good idea?” Blake sighs, dropping his head back.
“You could loosen up a bit; you’ve been a tense fuck recently,” Asher mumbles through the cigarette between his lips, flicking his lighter on.
Blake’s head snaps up, eyes sharp on Asher’s face.
“Nice to see you two actually turned up,” Asher continues.
“If it was my choice, I wouldn’t have come,” Kain grumbles.
I swing around to face him. “You do have a choice, viper, you can go home.” My nostrils flare with annoyance. Blake shifts awkwardly while Asher’s widened eyes bounce between us with curiosity, lighter slowly inching away from his cigarette.
“No can do, darling. You’re here, which means I’m here by default.” He takes the burning stick from Asher and places it in his own mouth.
I seethe. “Cassie, I’m hungry. Let's go.”
“Now?” She quirks a brow, her eyes running over Kain in a less than impressed way.
“Yes, now.”
Get me out of Kain Westbrook’s fucking proximity now.
I grip her hand, dragging her inside the church where the same red glow illuminates the intricate carvings on the wall. The altar with the cross hanging above it looks like a bad omen and all it’s missing is flames. Fake cobwebs cling to the pews, while tables are laid out in a buffet style surrounding the outside, and music blares from a speaker in the corner.
“Jord, slow down!” Cassie complains as I continue dragging her through the small crowds to the nearest table. My eyes land on a burger and I pick it up, looking around to make sure the guys haven’t followed us inside.
“What the hell was that?” she asks. I’d love to indulge her, but I need answers to my questions first.
I spin to face her. “Are you pregnant?” I whisper-yell, making sure no one can hear me. Though, the music is loud enough to mask our conversation.
Her natural smile drops from her face as our hands part. “Wow, straight to the point.”
