He opens up the door, and I climb inside, resting my head on the cool window the second he closes the door for me.
By the time he starts the engine, my eyes are heavy.
“Does tonight get me back in your good books?” he asks, his voice husky.
I look over at his beat-up knuckles and smile.
“Nope. Try harder.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Colten
I’ve not seen my wife in two days. Not since I carried her drunk and unconscious body into her house and laid her down on the bed. I made sure she had water and painkillers on the side table waiting for her hangover. Dom said she hasn’t been drunk like this in years. Last night, I almost gave in and stood outside her house like a lovesick teenager. And then I remembered who she is. She’s not a woman who wants sympathy. I’m not sure what she wants. But I know it ain’t that.
Gianna wants me to jump through hoops to get back in her good books, and I’m ready to try.
“What's up your ass?” Jett asks as he jumps up onto the fence.
My stallion, Tippy, named by Wyatt, stomps his foot.
“Nothing is up my ass, Jett. I tend not to shove stuff up there where it don’t belong,” I tell him, nudging Tippy forward so I’m closer to him.
“Did you know we have a G-spot up there?” he asks.
“Yeah. You did anatomy in school, right?”
He shrugs. “Didn’t listen much. I was too busy trying to get Martha to have sex with me.”
I laugh. I remember that. She ended up becoming a vet. I’ve actually called her in a few times to help with my shelter.
“Why don’t you ask Violet to peg you?” I suggest, keeping my face straight.
His eyes almost bulge out of his head. “No. God. No. I don’t want to. I was just saying. Making conversation.”
I nod.
His eyebrows pinch together. “Have you?” He can’t hide the shock in his voice.
“Have I what, Jett?”
“Had a dick up your ass?”
I don’t respond immediately; I want to let him stew on this one. “I usually prefer to shove a cactus up there.”
His face physically goes gray, and I can’t hold in my laughter.
“I’m fuckin’ with you. Look, I’m trying to get this horse I spent nearly a million dollars on to do sliding stops that will actually win us some money back. Do you need me?” I ask.
He rubs a hand over his face. “Hold on. You’ve thrown my entire thought process off.”
“You started it. Don’t ask a man what’s up his ass.”
He holds up his hands, almost falling backward off the fence post. “Yeah. No. I know why I’m here. Hunter told me we’ve got a family meeting in an hour. He texted you, but you didn’t answer.”
I stroke my fingers through Tippy’s black mane. “I’m on a fuckin’ horse, Jett.”
I swear to God, I can’t get shit done around this place without being interrupted. “I’ll be there,” I add.
