“You better.”

Rafe hung up, dropping his phone in his pocket and turning his attention to the worker.

“I’m gonna be a dad!” he shouted, letting his happy energy surge through him. The woman’s eyes widened. “I have to get to the hospital. My apologies. I’ll be back to finish the inspection another time.”

The suspicious worker finally let her guard slip and smiled at him.

“Don’t worry about the inspection, Your baby is more important. Go, go!” she said, shooing him toward the door.

“Thank you!” he yelled as he jogged toward the exit. Having a baby on the way was a great excuse to hightail it out of there without raising even more suspicion about his presence.

“I’m not sure if I’m ready for kids,” Garrett said over his earpiece. “You’re really rushing me.”

“Baby on the way always works on women,” Miguel said. “Chicks love babies.”

“Not all chicks,” Danvers growled. “Some of us prefer Ferraris.”

Laughter escaped Rafe as he ran. “Yeah, don’t be so sexist, Fake-ass Zorro.”

Miguel grumbled as the rest of the team laughed.

Rafe finally reached the warehouse doors and burst through them like his feet were on fire. He ran the rest of the way toward his car, giving the inside a quick check before hopping in the driver’s seat and making his way back to where the team waited for him.

“Good work, Misty,” McHugh said. “We can now prepare for the next stage. Status report?”

“In my car en route to base. ETA twenty-five minutes.” Rafe checked his mirrors again to make sure no one followed him. “No tails.”

“Sounds good. Stay vigilant.”

Twenty-three minutes and thirteen seconds later—because ETA sounded more like time to beat—Rafe pulled into the back alley behind their commandeered building and flashed his lights in a pattern to alert the team. A moment later, Garrett exited and walked toward the passenger door of the rental, a grin on his face.

As soon as Garrett got in the car and shut his door, he grabbed Rafe by the lapels of his jacket and yanked him forward, crashing their lips together. It took Rafe a second to catch up, meeting his kiss with fervor. They made out madly until both of them pulled apart, out of breath, Garrett’s forehead resting against his.

“Why does watching you work make me so hot?” Garrett whispered in the quiet of the car. The rest of the world didn’t exist at that moment. It was only Garrett and Rafe. Rafe would make damn sure he kept them safe for the rest of their lives.

“I don’t know, why does knowing you’re watching me work make me so hot?”

A smile grew on Garrett’s face. “Well, what are you waiting for? Let’s go home and take advantage of it.”

“Yes, sir,” Rafe answered, drawing a growl from Garrett as he sat back in his chair and buckled his seatbelt.

Rafe put the car in drive and continued down the alley to head back to Garrett’s place. He loved the idea of that being his home. In his heart, Garrett was his home, but the house made for a reliable secondary location.

“McHugh said we can grab a nap and they’ll let us know when the package starts moving,” Garrett said as Rafe drove back to Cherrywood. “No sense in watching it sit in that warehouse all day.”

“Hm, I think I have a better idea than a nap.”

“Do you want to have more super achy sex? I don’t think I’ve ever had so much pain and pleasure at the same time.”

After their fight at the gym, both of them rode high on adrenaline, and they attacked each other the second they got inside the house. It practically turned into a rematch as they wrestled for dominance and bumped into every piece of furniture.

This morning, they both felt like they got run over by a tank.

“I’m thinking we should take a bath to loosen our muscles.”

Garrett sighed in the seat next to him. “Mm, that sounds perfect.”

Later, when Rafe settled in Garrett’s lap in the tub, his back to Garrett’s chest, the aches drifted away, like his consciousness. He’d almost dozed off a few times before Garrett’s words woke him.
