“I don’t play about my daughter’s safety,” the hunter said, looking at us, then taking her gun and shooting at Dante again, hitting him in the head again, creating a giant hole in his face.

She immediately turned towards Dante’s mate, gun raised, pointing directly at her. Another shot let off. But Dante’s mate was quick on her feet. She dodged the first bullet, then ran towards the back of the house. The hunter followed behind her, shooting back to back.

I walked over to Dante’s limp body. A chunk of his head was partially hanging off. One would think he was dead, but his chest was still rising and falling, although his breaths were slow and labored, which meant he was most likely dying. But there was a slim chance his body could still heal. Looking at his condition, I doubted he’d make it. I wasn’t willing to chance it. Standing over him, I lifted my foot, smashing it into his skull, finishing the job.

“Gah damn,” Tahji said, sounding repulsed. “You couldn’t have just broken his neck?”

“Stop crying like a bitch,” I chuckled, trying to shake Dante’s blood and brains off my shoe. “It would have been a mess either way.” Ignoring the scowl on Tahji’s face, I walked over to Quinny. “You okay?” I asked, pulling her into my arms, then kissing the top of her head.

“Yeah.” She looked up at me with nothing but love in her eyes. A little pout spread across her lips. “I gotta agree with Tahji. That was gross. Don’t do that anymore,” she fake-scolded me.

“I’m sorry, baby,” I replied, kissing her lips. “I won’t do it again.” Quinny could have told me to jump off the tallest building in the world, and I would have done it to make her happy. Nothing was too much for my soulmate.

“She got away,” the hunter said, out of breath, as she walked back into the room.

“Your mama is a hunter?” I asked Quinny.

She shrugged. “I guess. I haven’t seen her since Sutton was a baby.”

“Where is Sutton?” the hunter asked, looking around anxiously.

“She’s back with her soulmate. She isn’t in the condition to deal with stuff like this,” Tahji answered.

“What the hell does that mean? What’s wrong with Sutton?” Quinny asked me with a heated glare.

“She’s fine. Just pregnant.” I sighed, cutting my eyes at Tahji’s big-mouth ass.

“Pregnant? How? It’s been a week, maybe a day longer.” Quinny looked confused.

I smirked. “Well, while you were running from me, Benji and Sutton were hunching and made your niece or nephew. You could have been pregnant right along with her, but you wanted to play games.”

Quinny blushed. “We still have time to catch up,” she said, giving me a lustful wink. “Isn’t it too early to tell she’s pregnant?”

“Not with her carrying the offspring of a vampire. She won’t be pregnant as long as she would be with a human baby. Five months is full term for vampires.”

“I can’t believe my daughters are soulmates to vampires,” the hunter said, smacking her face. “I knew I should have never left you girls with Melvin. I was so fucking stupid. Where is that bastard?”

“Don’t talk about my dad,” Quinny snapped. “While you were out tryna be G.I. Jane, he raised us on his own. If it weren’t for my dad and Aunt Tela, neither Sutton nor I would have made it.”

The hunter let out a hearty laugh. “Aunt Tela. That bitch wasn’t your aunt. She was fucking Melvin. Why do you think I left your dad? Tela was his soulmate, but he felt guilty for leaving me while I had you. That little bitch Emberly, Tela’s daughter? She’s your sister. She and Sutton were born days apart.”

“See, this is why I don’t fuck with hunters,” Tahji said, shaking his head. “Do you really think that this was the proper time to tell Quinny some shit like that? You couldn’t have said that shit with a tiny bit of compassion?” Tahji grilled the hunter.

“My bad. It’s still fresh for me.”

Quinny was silent, staring off into space as I asked her, “Are you okay?”

She didn’t vocalize her response. She shook her head no as she buried her face into my chest. “Do you want to leave?” I questioned her again. This time, she shook her head yes. I lifted Quinny up, cradling her in my arms.

“Wait, Quinny, I’m sorry. I let my emotions get the best of me. I shouldn’t have blurted all that out.”

Quinny sighed, with her head resting on my chest. “It’s fine.” Her tone was void of any emotion.

“Please, Quinny, I just found you again. I don’t want to lose touch with you, and I would love to see Sutton,” her mama begged, and I actually felt bad for her. Hunters weren’t the best with emotions. They were raised to be coldhearted. The less they felt, the better hunters they became.

“Take my number,” I said as her mama hurriedly pulled her phone from her pocket. I called off my number, then said, “Give Quinny a few days before you call.” She nodded, understanding.

With that, we turned around and headed out of the front door. Right now, the most important thing to me was Quinny being back with me. We could figure out everything else later.
