She nodded, took an unsteady step back, and got in her car. As he watched her drive away, his mind and body buzzed. Holy shit, their chemistry was electric. His lips still sizzled from the touch of her soft lips.
And, halle-fucking-lujah, there was life below his belt again.
Chapter five
Lex spent the night dreaming about Summer and woke up to the fading scent of coconuts. As excited as he was about his upcoming date, as the day progressed, he got more and more nervous. By lunchtime, he was scared shitless. Scared he was going to mess up somehow. Scared she would decide she didn’t like him. And scared his body might let him down the moment he needed it to perform.
Not that he planned on having sex that night. No way. It was only their first date. And even though he was normally a one-night stand kind of guy, that shit was changing. He was about to go out on a real date with a true lady. A real fucking date—something he hadn’t done in… Well, it had been so freaking long, he couldn’t even remember. But he did know his end game tonight wasn’t a roll in the hay. He genuinely wanted to get to know Summer and spend some quality time with her. Maybe, hopefully, eventually, the time would come when they might take the next step.
A crippling thought struck him—what if he truly had lost his mojo? Panic raged through him like wildfire. He couldn’t enjoy his date with Summer if doubts kept eating him up. No way. He needed advice that would send him off with his usual confidence and aplomb.
Forget the Motley Crew—they’d just rib him. He needed their women. All wise beyond their years. Besides, who could give him better advice about a woman in her fifties than women in or near fifty?
Lex fired off a group text to Julia, Ellie, Lottie, Sera, Sabrina and Essie.
Lex: S.O.S. Bachelor drowning.
Julia: What’s going on?
Sera: Does it have to do with the woman you talked to aaalllll night long?
Lottie: You were too cute together!!!!!!
Essie: heart and kiss emojis
Jesus, they responded faster than an SR-71 Blackbird reaching Mach 2.5.
Lex: I’m not too proud to say I need some advice, ladies.
Sabrina: What kind of advice?
Lex: …
Ellie: You know we’re here for you.
Julia: Come to Old Glory and fill us in.
Lex: Brand will be there. I’d rather keep it between us…if you don’t mind. It’s personal.
Shit. He didn’t want his friends showing up and getting in on the conversation. And he trusted the women to help him and not blab.
Julia: Don’t worry about him. He, Wes and Jayson went fly fishing. They’ll be gone all afternoon.
Relief swept through him.
Lex: Perfect. See you soon. And I’ll make it worth your time.
He added emojis of donuts and cookies. What woman could resist freshly-baked sweets? And even though he was nervous to tell them what was bothering him, if it helped him in his quest to get the girl, their advice would be worth the potential embarrassment.
Lex pocketed his phone, grabbed his keys and wallet, and hopped into his Yukon. He drove down to the bakery on Main Street and bought two big boxes of sweet treats. Then he headed over to Old Glory, and he sincerely hoped he wouldn’t regret spilling his guts.
After some quick hugs, they sat down at their usual table next to the fireplace. Julia and Lottie brought over some hot tea and a carafe of coffee, and then the women tore open the boxes of donuts and cookies.
“What’s going on?” Julia dove right in, obviously eager to help.
Lex sighed and raked both hands through his hair. They all looked at him expectantly, patiently waiting, and he shook his head. “Summer and I have a date tonight,” he said tentatively, “but I’m…nervous.” He sighed again. “She’s older than me, which I don’t care about, but she seems hung up on the fact. I have to somehow convince her it doesn’t matter. The truth is, I’ve never dated an older woman. And I’m worried she’ll see through me and decide I’m not worth it.”
A couple of the women scoffed. “You can’t be serious,” Julia said. He sighed then looked down at the table and shook his head. “Oh, my God, you are serious.”
