His mouth found hers, and she sighed into the kiss. Life wouldn’t be easy, and there’d be hurdles they’d have to get over, but they’d work through them together, because they were a team. Their love for each other was strong enough to handle anything thrown at them.
Epilogue
Margot looked at the large yellow envelope that had just been delivered for Damon. The name in the top left-hand corner was a name she’d become familiar with over the last couple of months.
She was also aware of what the contents were.
“It’s arrived then?”
Turning, her heart fluttered in her chest when she smiled up at the man standing by her desk. The love of her life. The man who owned her completely, and she owned him. The man who had helped her through her recovery. It had been three months since the incident with Ivan. It had been a stressful time being reliant on people, but now it was part of her past, and it had only strengthened her relationship with Damon.
“Yep.” She held it out, and he took it from her, his fingers brushing hers. A deliberate move. An intimate touch he always did when she handed him something. Working together, along with being in a relationship, hadn’t proven difficult at all. “The final chapter has arrived.”
Damon grabbed the letter opener from her desk and slid it through the flap. He pulled out the papers that would confirm the transfer of the funds from the trust his great-grandfather had set up for his dad. The sum was staggering, and he hadn’t quite decided what to do with it. They’d had plenty of discussions and a couple of ideas, but nothing was decided.
It would sit in a bank account until Damon was ready to use it for whatever purpose he wanted.
It also signified the complete closure of his relationship with his father’s family. At least those in Queensland. She’d encouraged him, and he’d met the cousin who lived in Perth. They were building a tenuous relationship, and whether anything grew from it, that was up to Damon, and she would support him in whatever he wanted to do. He hadn’t made any attempt to contact his mother’s side of the family and she doubted that he would.
“Well, that’s that then.” He tucked the papers back in.
She got up and wrapped her arms around him. “How are you feeling?”
“Fine. It’s always been an unemotional decision for me, because I’ve never had anything to do with them. Am I grateful for the funds? Sure, but I don’t need them. I never had.”
“I know, and whatever you do with it, will be wonderful.” She went up on tiptoe and pressed her lips against his. The slap of the envelope hitting her desk reached her as Damon’s arms closed around her and he deepened the kiss, only stopping when they heard a throat clearing behind them.
They broke apart and turned to find Steve watching them with an indulgent smile. They were very careful not to have any PDAs at work, but today was a little different. It was Friday, and everyone had left early.
Summer was almost upon them in Perth, and the weather was divine. They were heading down to the foreshore to have a catered lunch and drinks. A welcome to summer and the Christmas season party.
“You two ready to go?” Steve asked.
Margot laughed lightly. “Yep.” She and Damon had only been waiting for the delivery, and Steve needed to finish up a couple of things. “Let’s do this.” She grabbed Damon’s hand, and they all walked out of the office.
The three of them climbed into the waiting Uber, and a couple of minutes later, they were at the grassy area that looked over the city of Perth. A large open tent had been erected, and there were tables and chairs, along with a couple of couches set up for them.
“Tabitha did an amazing job,” Margot commented, as they walked beneath the shade of the tent.
“My wife is amazing, and I see her, so I need to go tell her how much I appreciate her hard work.” Steve winked and hurried over to his wife, sweeping her up in his arms and kissing her.
Margot looked around at the group. Everyone was there, including Bayden Price, the Australian Federal Police Officer, who was talking to Wilt. The conversation looked serious, and she wondered what it was all about, but it wasn’t a concern for her today.
Narelle and Indigo were sitting on one of the couches, and Margot spied Indigo’s best friend Zara sitting in a chair as well. She looked a little tense, and her smile was forced. It wasn’t unusual to see Zara, as she’d been making regular trips to visit Indigo, particularly as Wilt and Indigo’s wedding was only a couple of weeks away. It was going to be a Christmas themed wedding, and Margot was excited to be a part of it. But there was something up with Zara.
A high-pitched squeal drew her attention away from the group of women, and she spied Charlee, Lauren’s daughter, running from Reed, her stepdad, before he scooped her up, and she hugged him tight.
This was her family, and she was so grateful to be a part of it.
“Happy?” Damon tightened his hold around her waist.
She looked up, her heart bursting with love for him. “Absolutely. How about you?”
“I could be happier.” His eyes darkened and her stomach dropped. What was he saying? Did he want to end things with her? But if that was the case, he wouldn’t have kissed her like he had in the office. Nor would he be holding her as closely as he was.
“What do you mean?”
He dropped onto his knee, and she gasped out loud as he pulled a ring from his pocket. “Margot Reid, you captivated me from the moment I met you. I’m very happy, but I know I’d be happier if I had forever with you. Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” She squealed, tears streaming down her face. Damon stood, slid the ring on her finger and framed her face with his hands.
“I love you so much,” he whispered before he captured her lips. Around her, she heard the claps and whistles.
When they broke apart, they were surrounded by everyone wishing them well.
A spoon tapping against a glass quietened the conversation. Steve held up a glass. “Congratulations to you both. I hope you’ll be very happy. I guess this is now an engagement party.” Everyone laughed. “Here’s to the happy couple, and the soon to be newlyweds, Wilt and Indigo. There’s a reason they call December the silly season month. We’ve got a wedding and Christmas to celebrate!”
Margot snuggled in closer to Damon and sipped the champagne that had been shoved into her hand.
Life was pretty damn good.
