“Did you want something?” Margot asked, pulling him from his thoughts.

“Yeah, I need your car keys.”

Her eyebrows rose in question at his brusque tone. “I’m sorry, what do you need?”

He loved it when she sassed him back. She hadn’t done it much recently, but then again, a lot had been going on. He’d been waiting for her to have another panic attack like she’d had at the jewelry event a few weeks ago, but there’d been no sign of any anxiety.

Did that mean she was more relaxed around him and wasn’t scared?

Something else he could unpack when he had some time.

“Margot, can I please have your car keys?” The corners of his mouth twitched, but he didn’t let the smile escape.

“That’s better. What do you need them for?”

While he’d told Wilt he would give Margot the real reason for him taking her keys, now that it was upon him, he wasn’t sure if it would be a good idea or not.

“Damon, what’s going on?”

His hesitation had been enough for her to pick up on that it wasn’t a usual request. “Wilt and I have a theory, and I need to check your car.”

So he didn’t quite give her the truth, but if he and Wilt’s assumption was wrong, then he’d caused her unnecessary worry.

“Am I going to know about this theory, or do you want to prove it before you tell me?”

Nothing got past Margot, but he latched onto the excuse she’d given him. “Yeah, that.”

Margot studied him for a few more seconds, as if trying to determine what was going on. “Okay,” she said, as she pulled out a key from her top drawer and unlocked her bottom one, where she pulled out her purse and got the keys for him.

Damon had known she put her purse in her bottom drawer, but there had to be a safer way for her to store her personal items, that didn’t involve pulling a key from her top drawer, where anyone could get it.

Again, another issue for later on. He took the keys from her, making sure to brush his fingers against hers. “Thanks, Meg.”

He headed for the door before he did something stupid like pull her from her chair and kiss her again like he’d been wanting to do since that first night she’d come to stay with him.

This morning, when her worry had been palpable, he’d wanted to pull her close and assure her that everything was fine. And it had been. He still couldn’t understand why he’d freaked out when he’d heard the sound of kids yelling, but he’d rushed out to check anyway. All he’d done was cause Margot unnecessary stress, something he was wanting to avoid doing.

He reached his car and got in. While he was driving to his place, he kept a vigilant eye out on who was behind him, but there was nothing to indicate he was being followed.

Once in his garage and parked beside Margot’s car, he closed the door to ensure that no one was watching him. Turning the light on, he unlocked Margot’s compact SUV and began a thorough inspection of it. He was going to check every nook and cranny. If he had to pull apart the seats, then that’s what he’d do.

The front and back seating spaces were clear, which left the hatch area. He opened the tailgate and set to work. He’d just about given up on finding anything, when he noticed a small box tucked at the back of the spare wheel cavity. It was rectangle in shape, and thin. Something that wouldn’t be disturbed, or seen if she got a flat and had to replace the tire.

Prying it lose he opened it. “Motherfucker!”

Inside was a popular tracking disk that a lot of people put in their luggage, so they could locate it.

Wilt had been right, and it wouldn’t have mattered where Margot had gone, the person would’ve found her.

He pocketed the item and closed up Margot’s car. He needed to get back to the office as quickly as possible, and maybe Wilt could use his magic and find out who the disk belonged to. Damon had no idea if that was possible, but Wilt had some scarily brilliant computer skills, and if there was a chance he could get the owner’s information, then he would.

Once again, Damon had summoned his friends to the conference room. He hadn’t wanted to include Margot, not because he was going to keep the information from her, but the opposite. He didn’t want to break it to her in front of everyone. It was something that needed to be done in private. Where he could hold her while the enormity of it all sunk in.

The moment the door shut behind Andy and he’d taken a seat, Damon pulled the tracking device from his pocket and laid it on the table. “I found this in Margot’s car.”

A chorus of shit and fuck came from his friends.

“Wilt was the one who brought up the idea of someone putting something in her car to track her movements,” Damon stated without emotion, still annoyed he hadn’t considered it. He should’ve. It should’ve been one of the first things he’d considered when he’d seen the photo in the most recent message to Margot.
