Was that really what he heard, or was he making excuses? It didn’t matter, he was here now and they could get to work.
“Okay, you ready?” It seemed strange for her to ask the question he always asked her.
“Yep.” He moved closer to her, pausing. “Are you okay?”
Margot blew out a breath. “I am now. I’ve gotten so used to seeing you waiting for me, that when you weren’t here and you didn’t answer me, I started to think something bad had happened.”
He touched her cheek lightly, a gesture she loved him doing. “I’m sorry for scaring you.”
She shrugged, as if it wasn’t the big deal she was making it out to be, and then headed toward the door that led from the kitchen to the garage.
Once they were settled in the car and on their way, she pulled out her phone to check the email she’d seen come in. It was more than likely spam, because that was all she seemed to get today, but sometimes her parents sent an email letting her know what they were up to. Perhaps it was from them.
The song on the radio faded to the background as she opened it up.
You didn’t think you could get away from me did you? I will always know where you are, Margot.
There was an attachment, but she didn’t want to open it.
“What’s wrong?” Damon flicked his attention to her for a second before looking back at the road.
The last thing she wanted to do was distract him while he was driving. “Nothing.”
“Try again, Meg. I heard you gasp. What are you looking at?”
She hadn’t thought she’d made a sound when she’d read the contents of the email, but she must’ve. Margot pressed her lips together, still not wanting to say anything. “It can wait,” she ended up muttering, knowing that she needed to give Damon some sort of answer to his question.
“Fine,” he ground out, but the way his fingers flexed around the steering wheel suggested he was anything but.
The rest of the drive passed in silence, but the air was thick with tension between them, and Margot wished she had waited until they were in the office before she opened her message. Or not at all.
Damon parked in his usual spot, and as much as she wanted to jump out the moment the car had stopped, she stayed where she was so Damon could check the surrounding area before she got out.
It seemed over the top unnecessary in her mind, but the habits he’d picked up while he’d been in the Army were hard to forget for him.
The door opened, and she placed her hand in the one he held out, like always, and he helped her from the car. Every other day, he dropped the connection and she always wished he wouldn’t. Of course, today would be the day when he didn’t let go and she wanted him to.
They made their way to the office, again neither one saying a word. Margot had a fair idea of what was going to happen when they arrived, and sure enough, instead of letting her stop by her desk, Damon led her past it toward the conference room.
“We need a meeting,” he said as he walked past the group of desks where Andy, Wilt, and Reed all sat at.
As if they all could tell that something had happened, they didn’t question Damon. They passed Steve’s office, and the man looked at them before pushing back from his desk and heading in their direction. It was as though they had a silent way of communicating. Or they were so in tune with each other, that words weren’t necessary.
Once everyone was in the room and were all seated, Damon held out his hand. “May I have your phone please?”
“What’s going on here?” Steve asked, giving her a few seconds reprieve from handing over her device. It wasn’t as if she wasn’t going to. Margot had picked up enough working at Power Security to know an electronic message was a good way to find a person’s digital footprint. Wilt was amazing at using his skills in that respect.
“Margot received a message today. I’m not sure if it was a text or email, but it upset her, and I have a feeling it’s from the person who sent her the photos.” Damon looked at her, as though he was daring her to contradict him. Which was impossible because he’d nailed everything. And she didn’t even bother questioning how he worked all that out, it was what the men in the room did for a living. They read between the lines and found the truth.
“Damon’s right.” Was all she said as she passed him the phone, after unlocking it and opening the message.
He studied it for a second, his lips firming into a thin line. “What the fuck?” he said, after he tapped the screen, no doubt opening the attachment.
“Care to enlighten us?” Andy posed the question.
Needing to have some control of the situation, Margot spoke up before Damon could say anything. “Basically, the message says that did I really think I could get away, because they’ll always know where I am. There was an attachment, but I didn’t open it.”
“Damon?” Wilt looked at his friend, concern highlighting his piercing blue eyes. Considering what he had gone through with his fiancée, Margot could understand his need to know everything.
