“Do you know if your friend used it or not?”

“Oh yeah. She met and fell in love with an American guy while she was traveling in Europe with a tour group. He was wonderful, and ensured that every piece in that cabinet was packed and shipped over to Maryland after they got married.” A wistful smile played along her mouth. Her lips were still puffy, and he was tempted to taste them again, but controlled himself.

“We should eat before it gets cold,” she said quietly.

“We should.”

Yet neither of them moved for a few seconds, both staring at each other, but lost in their own thoughts.

Unable to help himself, he reached over and brushed the back of his fingers down her cheek before he stepped away and headed for the stool and his dinner.

It was the only way to stop himself from pulling her in his arms and forgetting all about eating.

“Are you almost ready to go?”

Damon stood in the doorway of the bathroom as Margot gave her cheeks one last sweep of blush. “You know I can make my own way to work, don’t you?”

They’d been living together for a week now, and every day, they had the same conversation. It was almost as if this was their thing now.

“I know, but as I happen to work at the same place as you do, it makes sense to carpool. Think of it as we’re doing our bit to help the environment.”

And like she always did when he finished saying the same thing, she smiled and laughed. “Give me five.”

His answering grin was getting bigger and bigger. The more time they spent together the more relaxed they were becoming around each other. It helped that Damon had given her the master suite which had its own bathroom, so she was able to spread her shit everywhere and not bother him.

When he’d shown her the bedroom that first night, she thought she was taking his room from him, but he assured her that his parents had renovated the house and had added a bathroom to his bedroom to make it its own suite. He’d also explained that he hadn’t been able to bring himself to sleep in the room his parents had shared for so many years. To him, it was their place, and not his.

The way he spoke about his parents with open affection and love was so different to how she thought and spoke about her own folks.

That first night when he’d opened up about the cabinet that his mum had had since she was a young woman, was yet another side to Damon that he’d shown her. He’d given her an amazing kiss as well. Sometimes she imagined she could still feel his lips on hers. The way he’d gripped her ass and squeezed it.

Margot determinedly shoved the memory down. She didn’t need to be all hot under the collar when she was about to spend fifteen minutes in the car with him. Not with his alluring scent surrounding her, and only a center console separating them.

Satisfied with how she looked, she went into her room and grabbed her purse, picking up her phone from the charging station and noticing she had an email come in on her personal account while she’d been getting ready. She popped it in her bag, she’d look at it in the car.

If today was like the last week, Damon would be leaning against the kitchen counter, scrolling his phone, waiting for her.

As she walked into the kitchen, she found it empty. “Damon?” she called out, spinning around to see if he was in the living room. That was empty too.

She listened to see if he’d gone out into the garage and started the car, but she couldn’t hear the quiet hum of the engine.

Panic settled in her belly.

Where was he?

Where had he gone?

Had someone broken into the house and hurt him?

But if that was the case, she would’ve heard the window, or door smashing. It would’ve echoed around the house. Not to mention the guy was a former special forces soldier. He could take someone out in his sleep.

As she was reaching into her purse to grab her phone to call the police, she heard a stamping sound from outside, and then the front door opened and Damon walked through, looking relaxed, as if he hadn’t a care in the world. “Oh my God, you scared me. Where did you go?”

“Sorry, I heard something outside, so I went and checked. It was only some kids riding bikes down the street, yelling loudly.”
