Page 3 of Pawn

The Pawn.

The piece nobody watches. The piece that can only move forward. It cannot retreat, cannot sidestep, cannot move the way the powerful pieces move. It advances one square at a time, and the board ignores it, and the players forget it, and the men writing their histories from comfortable distances do not bother to track its progress across sixty-four squares because a pawn is not worth watching.

Until it reaches the other side.

Until it becomes something else entirely.

The board has shifted for the last time.

The pieces still standing have no idea what is coming.

But I do.

I always do.

RIVAS FAMILY OPERATIONS

Internal Intelligence Record — Restricted Distribution

Compiled by the Office of the Consigliere

For authorized eyes only

This record provides the updated official account of significant events involving the Rivas family and associated organizations. This file supersedes all prior versions. Entries have been revised, expanded, and corrected where field intelligence has been confirmed or contradicted by recent events.

The events documented in this revision are final.

The Shadow Network — Giovanni Rivas's posthumous seven-node succession protocol — has been fully detonated and dismantled. All seven nodes resolved. The final node activated during the birth of Romeo Rivas's daughter and was neutralized on the same marble counter where the family eats breakfast. The will has been found, read, and rewritten. The ghost has played his last move.

The Rivas family is no longer under siege. It is no longer fractured. It is no longer consolidating.

It is whole.

Read accordingly.

SUBJECT FILE — THE RIVAS FAMILY

Family Designation: The Rivas Organization

Former Head: Giovanni Rivas — deceased

Current Operational Structure: Shared leadership — four brothers, equal authority

Status: Active. Stable. Arrived.

Note on status revision: Previous assessment listed this organization as "Consolidated. Under siege." That is no longer accurate. The siege is over. The succession protocol that has been detonating across this family since Giovanni's death has been fully resolved — not by the terms Giovanni intended, but by the terms his youngest son rewrote.

The will named Guido Rivas as sole heir. Giovanni chose the Pawn. The entire Shadow Network — seven nodes, seven trials — was a delivery system designed to place the crown on the boy who crossed the board in silence.

Guido Rivas held the crown. Then he set it down.
