Red:

Okay good because I think I might actually be losing my mind.

Theo:

That makes two of us.

Red:

I keep replaying it.

Theo:

Yeah?

Red:

You kissing me in the driver room.

Against the wall.

You and your stupid hands.

Theo:

My hands specifically?

Red:

Shut up.

Theo:

Can’t.

Ego is boosted permanently now.

Red:

Theo I’m serious.

I can’t turn my brain off.

Jesus Christ. I stared at the screen for so long another message came through.

Red:

so…surprise

Before I could even answer, a knock sounded at my door. Everything in me stilled. Three soft knocks were followed by silence, until the sound of my heart pounding in my chest to an erratic rhythm filled the room. I crossed the room fast enough to nearly trip over my own bag and yanked the door open.

Maisey stood there in sleep shorts and one of those giant hoodies like the ones she used to steal from me when we were teenagers, but this one had Kaz Energy Racing on the front. She looked so damn good in my team’s colors, it made my heart race. Her hair was messy and cascading down her shoulders. Her cheeks were pink like she’d argued with herself before coming here, and she looked just as wrecked by this as I felt.

For a second, neither of us spoke. Then Maisey exhaled shakily and looked up at me with wide eyes.

“I can’t sleep,” she admitted in a rush, “and I can’t turn my brain off, and I just keep thinking about kissing you over and over again, and I…just needed to see you.”

Something in my chest caved in completely.
