My mouth fell open. “Did you cheat on Daddy?”

She turned. “I did not say that.”

“You said you cried in another man’s arms!”

“People have arms.”

“MAMA!”

She started laughing. The garage door opened and Daddy’s voice came from the back.

“I’m home!”

Mama looked at me and placed one finger against her lips. Daddy walked into the kitchen carrying grocery bags. Mama reached for a bag.

Daddy looked between us. “What y’all talking about?”

“Nothing,” Mama said.

Mama shoved a grocery bag into my hands. “Put those tomatoes away.”

I laughed until my stomach hurt. Maybe that was the thing about our parents. We spent childhood believing we knew the whole story because we lived in the house. Turns out, we only knew the chapters adults let us read.

I put the tomatoes away and Mama went back to talking to Daddy like she hadn’t just detonated twenty years of family history.

Blair

I finally mailed the letter to her business address that I’d found online. I slid it through the slot at the post office and stood there staring at the metal door for a few seconds afterward. That was it. Something I’d carried for years belonged to someone else.

I went back to my car and Nash had texted.

Nash: Still a go for tonight?

Blair: Yes.

Nash: That answer came too easy. Who are you and what did you do with Blair?

Blair: LMAOOO

Nash: 7:30. Wear something comfortable.

At seven-thirty, Nash pulled up outside my house in jeans, a black sweater, and that irritating smile he wore whenever he knew something I didn’t.

I opened the passenger door. “Where are we going?”

“Hello to you too.”

“Hi.”

I kissed him. “Where are we going?”

He laughed. “You have control issues.”

I buckled my seat belt. “Where?”

“You’ll see.”
