The pity in my name made me want to disappear.
“He’s home every night.”
My eyes opened. “What?”
“Home.” She pointed vaguely toward wherever their house existed outside these walls. “With me.”
I stared at the floor.
“We eat together. He complains about work. We watch TV. And fuck almost every night.”
My stomach turned, realizing that he was having sex with us both. “What?”
“You thought we didn’t? We’re married, sweetheart.”
She stared directly at me. “What do you think married people do?”
“He told me you hadn’t touched each other in years.”
She laughed. “Oh, baby. He really made a fool out of you.”
I hated that fucking baby. It made me feel stupid every single time.
“We have sex.”
I looked away.
“Very inappropriate, married people sex.”
“Okay. That’s enough”
“No. You want the truth. Here it is.”
She stepped closer. “You wanted to be in a married woman’s business. Welcome the fuck inside.”
I covered my face before saying the one thing I hadn't planned to say.
“He got me pregnant.”
Ravenna stopped and everything in her face disappeared. “What?”
The room started to feel smaller. “I was pregnant.”
Her eyes dropped to my stomach as if the pregnancy might still be there. “When?”
“A year and a half ago, but I terminated.”
She had a look on her face. It was shock, but I also saw a little pity. “Why?”
My laugh sounded broken. “Because he told me the pregnancy would destroy you. He told me finding out he was having a baby with someone else might push you over the edge.”
Ravenna stared.
“And that it would destroy him in the divorce. He said you would take everything he’d built. He said he wanted to marry me first and do things right. Then have a baby.”
Ravenna started laughing.
I stared at her. “What?”
