“No.”

“Ex-wife?”

“I don’t know.”

“Girlfriend?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I paused because I realized I’d never actually asked.

“Blair.”

“He doesn’t have a girlfriend.”

“That was not my question.”

“I’ve been around this man for six months.”

“At work.”

“All hours.”

“At work.”

“I would’ve noticed.”

“Men have hidden whole second families from women they LIVE with.”

I laughed. “He’s single.”

“How do you know?”

I rolled my eyes. “Because he asked me on a date.”

The silence on the other end was disrespectful.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Say it.”

“I hope you have fun.”

“Thank you. Now, I’m hanging up.”

She laughed. “Text me when you get there.”

“Bye.”

“And send your location.”

“Goodbye.”

I disconnected the call, then stared at myself in the mirror. He was single. Of course he was. I’d never seen a woman and never heard him mention one. He’d flirted with me openly, asked me to dinner openly, spent late evenings at the property without anyone calling asking where he was. He talked about family like something he wanted someday. There had been no reason to think otherwise, so I didn’t.
