“Technically, because you’ve drunk some and it was full, I would say that it’s now half empty,” Luc says and then frowns. “Actually, I’m not sure.”

Chapter Fourteen

Ever

“I think it would be half full,” Pete disagrees, although he’s now frowning too, as if he’s not sure either.

Cash shrugs, his handsome features relaxed as he leans against the wooden counter and looks fucking sexy while doing so.

“I think that it's subjective,” he says reasonably. “It depends on the person. You two just proved that by disagreeing with one another. Neither one of you is wrong, but neither one of you is right either.”

“Like Schrödinger’s cat,” Jensen mutters, entirely distracted by a bookcase full of knick-knacks.

“I don’t think it’s really the thing that we should be focusing on right now,” Trick reminds us, one of his eyebrows raised like he can’t quite believe that this is a conversation that we’re having right now.

He’s always the one to rein us in and remind us of what we’re supposed to be doing.

We’re all very easily distracted.

My gaze catches on Jensen, who is throwing tiny cheesy crackers in the air and trying to catch them in his mouth.

Some of us more than others.

Pete reaches down next to him and pulls his laptop out of his bag.

He’s done stuff to it so it’s all fancy and super technical. Obviously I have no idea what exactly he’s done, but I do know that it’s completely secure, unhackable, and can connect to Wi-Fi anywhere.

Almost anywhere.

He can do loads of stuff on it too that normal laptops can’t do. In fact, not even the other laptops at the organization can do it. It is completely his own design, and it's absolutely genius.

It’s no wonder that the tech guys have been trying to get him to come and work with them. His mind is incredible, and the way he views things is so completely unique.

“So, the island, as you know, is relatively small, getting to the property is going to be pretty easy, and the place has no near neighbors, so once we’re safely on the grounds, we should be good,” Pete starts to explain. “Linda has a security system set up, automatic lights inside and out. There are security cameras that I need to be able to plug into in order to loop the feed and stop them from triggering anything. There’s a fence surrounding the whole place. Giant keypad entry gates. There are no guards, and nothing else security wise. That’s it.”

“Do we know where you can plug in?” Trick asks.

Pete frowns. “That’s the weird part. It’s outside.”

“What?” Luc frowns. “That doesn’t seem smart at all. Having the control panel for the cameras outside makes it a hell of a lot easier for us to disable them, and anyone else if they were motivated enough.”

“Exactly. It doesn’t make much sense,” Pete says with a frown. “I am reasonably certain that there are cameras inside as well as outside, but as far as I can tell they’re all on the same system, so I should be able to loop those ones from the same place outside.”

“What about the gates?” Jensen asks, still trying to catch little cheese crackers in his mouth, except now he’s got Rage and Luc throwing them at him as well.

“I’ve got a small device that will override the system and open the gates, as if we put the code in,” Pete replies, completely used to their antics and not bothered in the slightest. “The same one that we used on that kidnapping in Brazil.”

“Nice. I like that little device,” Jensen says as he looks at Pete, and a cracker hits him in the temple. I snort as he looks at Rage, “Hey! Cheap shot.”

“Good shot,” Rage replies, his expression amused.

“Guys,” Trick says, trying not to smile as he gets us back on track. He looks at Pete. “You were saying?”

Pete grins, “I like the device too, it’s one of my favorites.” Pete says, replying to Jensen’s previous comment. He continues, “As always, I recommend that we go when the sun sets. It will take us forty or so minutes to drive there. We need to park the cars here,” he turns his laptop around and shows us an aerial view. “Then we’re going to go on foot through here. This is where Linda’s fencing starts. We’re going to have to bypass the gates on the way in and find a way over the fence. There is a dark spot here every twenty minutes. I’ll set the watches so that we all know when it is safe to get through, just in case we hit complications. We should be good to come out through the gates on the way back out, unless something changes and we decide when we’re there that it would be better to go out the same way that we came in.”

Trick nods, “Brilliant, thanks, Pete. We’ll head through or over the fence, whichever is easiest, and then we’ll split up. You’re all going to have to be incredibly careful of the cameras.”

“I have a map of where they all are. You can all study it before we leave in a couple of hours. I’ll wipe any footage that it captures of you once I’m in the system, but the less you’re seen, the less I have to do and the quicker it will take,” Pete explains, tapping away on his laptop again. “The cameras inside the fencing are pretty sporadic, and they aren’t well placed, it’s like she thought there was no chance that anyone could get past the gates or over the fence.”
