“Fucking hell, seriously?” Rage exclaims. “What idiot would want to resurrect that?”
“Ones that have no idea what the fuck they’re actually dealing with,” Atlas says, darkly. “D and Ryan both said, and I quote, ‘don’t worry, everything is under control.’”
“This is weird, right?” I ask.
“Maybe not,” Atlas says thoughtfully, still looking at his phone screen. “I mean, it is weird, but they were all friends before, so maybe it isn’t. Liam was one of them at one point.”
“Knowing D, he probably found out from Alaric what was going on and thought, hell, keep your enemies close, and Ryan has done the same,” I suggest.
It sounds like something that D would do.
“Yeah, that would make more sense,” Trick replies.
“At least Alaric is covered,” Pete points out. “Even if it does make us question Liam’s behavior more than we already were. I’m actually really glad that Ryan is getting some help.”
“Me too. They’re all adults, and they’re all very aware of who Liam is, and what he’s done. They can handle themselves,” I point out.
“Agreed,” Trick says, as he picks his phone back up and starts tapping on the screen. “I’m going to call Mr. R and fill him in on our side of the plan and make sure that everything is set up for the flight tomorrow.”
We all stay where we are, wanting to listen to the conversation because we’re nosy, and Mr. R might have more information for us, and it saves Trick having to repeat himself later on.
“Trick,” Mr. R greets warmly. “I was expecting a call from you. If there is an issue with heading to the island for Linda, that’s absolutely fine. I wanted to give you guys first refusal.”
“Thank you. We accept the job,” Trick confirms.
“As you mentioned to Pete, I’m more likely to know where she’s hidden things. So if there is anything to find, I’ll find it,” Luc replies. “Just to clarify, if we find her there, we’re bringing her in, yes?”
“Yes. We need to ask her some questions. She clearly knows more than we thought she did,” Mr. R replies, sounding annoyed. “Bring her in and check her residence for any information on what she’s been up to and what her link to Hunt is. We also need to know if she has any contacts on the island, so the place will need to be watched closely first.”
“Got it,” Trick replies with a nod that Mr. R can’t see. “In theory, this should be relatively straightforward.”
“In theory, it should,” Mr. R agrees, emphasizing the ‘in theory’ part. He knows as well as we do that these things tend to deviate from the plan more often than not. He asks, “Is there anything else?”
Luc and Cash share a look before Cash clears his throat and starts speaking, “As you know we went to see Raid and the others today and had a run-in with some jackasses that apparently won’t take no for an answer when it comes to buying their land.”
Chapter Thirteen
Ever
“What happened?” Mr. R asks sharply.
Luc winces slightly, “They weren’t going to take no for an answer. We asked them to leave. Then Cash and I took care of it.”
“Violently,” Cash grins with absolutely no remorse whatsoever.
Good. They did the right thing, and I’ll tell Mr. R that if he says otherwise.
“Are you okay?” Mr. R asks, with an edge to his voice.
“Yeah, we’re fine. They put up a bit of a fight, but nothing we couldn’t handle, and they left pretty quickly,” Luc replies honestly.
“Good,” Mr. R says, his tone returning to normal now that he knows they’re okay. “I know where you’re heading with this, and unfortunately, I have given them as much help and support with this matter as I can. There are complications, and it’s a private matter. I cannot get involved any further than I already have.” Before we can ask what that means exactly, he changes the subject, and my eyebrows rise. He continues, “Elijah should be home in a few days. I don’t anticipate that heading to the island will take very long, so you should have some time with them before they have to head back out.”
“Thank you,” Peter says.
“No problem, I need to go and finalize some things. Keep me updated,” he says and then hangs up.
“That was weird,” Jensen says immediately. “Wasn’t it?”
