“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll take more pictures before I send him, in case Bri needs proof of life.”

“God, she probably will,” Ash mumbled with a huff.

Cass laughed lightly and then said, “Good night, Ash.”

And even though he still didn’t want to hang up, he knew it was time. “Good night.”

The call disconnected, and a chill spread through the apartment—a reminder that he was alone. He swallowed hard and was about to try to drag himself to bed when his phone buzzed.

Cass (12:22 a.m.): Consider this your good night hug <3

A picture loaded—a close-up selfie of Cass. He was in his room, in bed, his head resting on his pillow and one arm bent up behind him. His eyes were as soft and kind as ever, and his warm smile banished every hint of the lonely chill Ash had felt when the call ended.

It was exactly what he’d needed.

He smiled and took a long, slow breath. Then he ran a hand through his hair, lifted up his phone, and took his own selfie.

Ash (12:24 a.m.): Hugging you back <3

He sent the photo immediately after the text and had to wait only a few seconds for Cass’s response.

Cass (12:25 a.m.): Ah, that’s the best hug

Cass (12:25 a.m.): Good night, Ash

Ash (12:25 a.m.): Good night, Cass

With one more long breath, Ash slipped his phone into his pocket, pushed himself to his feet, and shut out all the lights before heading to bed.

Cass (Monday, November 28, 2022 – 9:03 a.m.): Ollie is on his way to Seattle

Ash (9:58 a.m.): omg thank you thank you thank you

Ash (9:59 a.m.): You have no idea how much I appreciate it

Ash (9:59 a.m.): This morning was awful, she is addicted to that stuffie. I feel bad for the people at daycare

Ash (Monday, November 28, 2022 – 11:02 p.m.): She’s *still* awake, though at least she agreed to stop screaming

Cass (11:02 p.m.): I’m impressed you were able to reason with her

Ash (11:04 p.m.): “reason” might be a little strong

Ash (11:04 p.m.): I think she’s just too tired to keep making noise

Ash (Tuesday, November 29, 2022 – 3:46 p.m.): Ollie has arrived. All is right in the world

Cass (7:57 p.m.): You do realize that’s the most precious thing I think I’ve ever seen?

Cass (Sunday, December 11, 2022 – 10:57 p.m.): One hour left. You make it?

Ash (11:32 p.m.): application finished and submitted

Cass (11:32 p.m.): Woohoo! Congrats

Cass (11:33 p.m.): I’m so proud of you <3
