At least this was working in her favor. She still had quite a few hours on her shift. Surely, he wouldn’t wait around.
“Five.”
He pulled back his cuff, glancing down at his watch. A small smile played on his lips.
“Six hours, which means by law you’re entitled to a break.”
Oh shit.
He narrowed his gaze. “Take it now.”
She racked her brain for some type of excuse, but she wasn’t quick enough.
“Meet me outside,” Erik said, then walked toward the back exit.
There was an outdoor seating area with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. It was usually occupied by students. Since the library prohibited food and drink, it was a great alternative. She pushed open the door and found him sitting at the table on the far end. Imogene made her way to him, slowing her steps as she grew closer.
“I only have fifteen minutes.”
Erik nodded and gestured to the chair across from him.
She sat, clasping her hands in her lap. There was only one reason Erik was visiting her. It was the one topic she wouldn’t discuss. But Imogene had a plan. She could control the conversation, keeping it light and steering away from the incident.
“How are you?”
“I should be asking you that. You were the one who’d experienced a traumatic event.”
That didn’t work.
“I’m fine.”
He scanned her face and nodded. “I expected to see you at the station.”
I bet you did.
“Are you upset that I didn’t file charges?” Her tone was void of any emotion.
He cocked his brow, and his lips twitched. “Is Jekyll?”
The last thing she wanted to talk to him about was Jekyll or the MC. And she wouldn’t.
“He knows I won’t be working with Logan again, so he’s not really worried.”
In fact, he wasn’t concerned at all. According to Jekyll, the club had handled it. Imogene had pushed for more details but she didn’t get any. Jekyll claimed it was club business and Logan had been dealt with. He also assured her, she’d never have to worry about him again.
“So let me get this straight.” Erik paused. “Your man isn’t the least bit concerned about someone who basically kidnapped you and scared the hell out of you? A club based notoriously on revenge.” He spread his arms. “And that doesn’t strike you as odd?”
Imogene flattened her lips and remained silent.
“I have a theory I want to share. Had you pressed charges, Logan would’ve been arrested that night. There would’ve been no bond because he’s still on probation. He would’ve gone straight back to jail.” He smiled. “That means no one on the outside would have access to him. And for a club like Killcreek who’s based solely on revenge, that doesn’t work for them. So my theory would be that Jekyll didn’t want you to press charges and allow the law to do its job. Instead, he and the club would take care of Logan.”
Sounds about right.
Erik rested his elbows on the table. “What do you think of my theory?”
“I think if that’s what you believe then you should get Logan off the streets as soon as possible. Maybe get him protection from the club if you’re so worried about his well-being. I mean, someone should get protection in this whole scenario. It wasn’t available to me, and in the future it won’t be for another woman who has the unfortunate luck of crossing paths with Logan.” She shrugged, battening down her anger. “But yeah, definitely protect him, Erik.”
His jaw squared. “He’s missing, you know.”
