“Penny called this while we were on the inside.” Hyde grasped his shoulder. “Told her she was wrong. You’ve never taken an interest in any woman long term. But here you are proving me wrong and my old lady right.”

Jekyll remained silent.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

Hyde rolled his eyes, laughing. “Bullshit. I know you better than anyone. That woman got under your skin a long time ago. You telling me that spending the weekend with Imogene is nothing, is you lying. So?”

“Sex life with Penny so fucking boring now you want details on mine?”

Hyde smirked. “Nothing with Penny is ever fucking boring. And ’cause I love you, man, I’m not gonna tell her you even suggested that ’cause my hellcat would have your balls.”

I don’t doubt that.

“What are you doing here?” Jekyll asked, purposely shifting the conversation.

“Ace called me in. Meeting with Inez tonight.”

Jekyll smirked. “That’s always fun.”

Hyde grinned. “And she wants you there too, brother.”

Fuck me.

Chapter Sixteen

Imogene was heating up soup for dinner when she heard the sharp knock on her door. What the… She wasn’t expecting anyone. Afterall, I’m not allowed to have visitors. The knock was louder the second time. She dashed down the hall, checking the peephole. The guy in the dark suit was one of the men who’d helped move her things into the apartment. He’d also been the one who’d laid out all the rules. Mr. No. She’d seen him several times since then, but he always ignored her greeting. They all did.

This can’t be good.

She opened the door, smiling. “Hi.”

Imogene still didn’t know the names of any of the security.

“You got an animal in here?”

Uh oh.

“Um…” Imogene was prepared to lie, but Whiskers took that option out of her hands when his grumbling growl echoed through the apartment. Are you trying to get us evicted?

He narrowed his eyes.

“It’s a cat.”

His jaw squared. “Are you illiterate?”

“Excuse me?”

“Can. You. Read?”

I see where this is going.

“Yes.”

He slowly nodded. “Then exactly what part of ‘no pets” didn’t you understand?” He released a heavy breath. “Get your cat and bring it to Inez’s.”
