I have no clue who these people are or what they’re capable of.

“I’m telling you that if she gets so much as another scratch, I will kill every single person in your bloodline with a goddamn smile.”

My eyes widen as I stare at the man that spent so much of our lives making me miserable, and my hopeful heart does another flip it has no right doing.

Because no matter how I long for the boy that held one half of my heart before I ever realized what it meant, I’ll never be able to forget every second of pain he’s caused me.

CHAPTER FIVE

DAMON

NOW

I’ve never wanted to kill anyone more than I do these assholes.

How dare they put their hands on her?

How dare they hurt her?

Biting down on the inside of my cheek, I force the mask I’ve spent my life perfecting into place. If there were ever a time to be an unfeeling motherfucker, it’s right now.

I have no doubt that the others will find us, but I have to keep us alive in the meantime.

The barrel of a gun presses into my lower back, forcing me to take a step forward ahead of the motherfucker carrying Chloe like she’s nothing.

Sucking a breath into my lungs, I finally take in my surroundings. This is the thing about caring for others. It’s really fucking distracting.

Dim lights illuminate a farmhouse with boarded windows. The chipped paint and cracked porch are both signs of how long it’s been since someone has lived here.

The sky above us is clear and free of pollution, confirming we’re still far out of any major city, which I figured, seeing as we weren’t driving for long.

I’ve spent my whole life being aware of my surroundings, cataloging every detail around me, looking for threats lying in wait in the shadows. But I’m struggling to keep my mind on task when Chloe is in danger.

After shutting off my feelings toward her all those years, it’s almost impossible to shove them back in their box while I figure out how to get us the fuck out of here.

Maybe my father wasn’t completely out of his mind when he warned us against caring for others. It’s exactly as distracting as he made it seem all those years.

I catch sight of the asshole carrying Chloe and barely manage to swallow down the snarl that pushes to the surface.

She’s hurt, and he’s carrying her like she’s a bag of fucking flour.

A sharp jab in my spine reminds me why I have to keep my head on straight, even as my skin crawls with the need to kill every single person that has contributed to her pain.

Soon, I promise myself.

I’m shoved forward into a dark hallway that matches the exterior of the house. Cracked plasterboard, worn floorboards, and stains covering every surface I cast my eyes over. But I don’t get a chance to map out the floor plan before I’m shoved down a flight of stairs into what I can only assume is a basement.

The urge to fight washes over me, but I manage to squash it when I realize Chloe is being carried down behind me.

Getting her medical care is my priority right now.

There will be plenty of time for revenge once I ensure she’s not going to bleed out.

I’m shoved toward the far wall and barely get a chance to turn around before Chloe is dropped to the hard concrete floor with a sharp yelp.

I step forward, intending to snap the motherfucker’s neck for causing her an ounce of pain, but a rough sob stops me in my tracks.

Dropping to my knees, I pull her into my lap. It’s not much of an upgrade, but it’s infinitely more comfortable than the cold ground.
