She freezes with her hand on the entryway door and then slowly turns to face me.
Fuck she looks edible in the black dress that Rochelle chose. Modest where it should be for a funeral, but still fitted in all the places that remind me of her sexy body. The material is cut just above her knee, but she may as well be naked with how I pant at the sight of her legs.
The memory of her standing in the hallway last night wearing nothing but a dress shirt and panties flashes through my mind. My cock hardens instantly.
Fuck, she’s driving me crazy.
“Alden…is something wrong?”
“Yes. Where are you going?”
My heart is pounding harder than when I’m on a hunt as I walk toward her.
“I’m heading back to the city.”
That’s when I notice the bag in her hands that has the sleeve of her shirt from yesterday hanging over the lip.
“I’m terribly behind on orders since the funeral took priority. Not that I don’t appreciate the work, but the arrangements for the first six floors of your office building are due in three days. I want to ensure that our business dealings start on the right foot.”
Emily rambles, an endearing trait that annoys me in everyone else, but when it comes to her, I can’t get enough. I’ll listen to her voice all day. But what I really want to hear is Emily screaming my name. We’ll get there.
I step closer, and she straightens as if to brace herself. Good, stay off balance.
“Stay a little longer. I’ll give you a day’s extension on delivery,” I say, tucking a piece of her pretty blonde hair behind her ear.
It has taken me all this time to figure out what to call this color. It’s too light to be gold, too dark to be platinum, but it finally came to me when we were sitting at the kitchen table early this morning. It’s like a field of buttercups on a sunny day.
Everything about my Little Liability fascinates me. Especially those eyes, burning with lust while the rest of her is ready to bolt out the fucking door.
“Do you want me to beg?” My voice drops to a whisper. “I will get down on my knees right now if that is what it takes.”
I’m so close to crossing every line of public decency I’ve spent my life respecting. Normally, the thought repulses me. But…Emily has a remarkable talent for making my rules feel optional.
It’s so tempting to push up her dress and eat her like a fucking dessert right here in front of everyone. She swallows hard, and her hand lands on my chest…right over my heart.
“What do you say?”
“Okay…I guess a little longer won’t hurt,” Emily agrees, but I plan on more than a little…much more.
“Hi there, sorry to interrupt. You’re Alden, right? Rob’s brother?”
I turn at the sound of a female voice I don’t recognize.
One of the officers from New York, if her dress uniform is any indication. Around thirty of them made the long drive. She looks to be in her late twenties, but her shoulders are rigid, her black hair is twisted into a tight bun, and her face is all business.
“I am, and you are?”
“Detective Hiller, you can call me Jen. I was your brother’s partner.”
Rob has never mentioned her to me, but from the way Emily tenses, I know that she’s heard the name. And whatever she’s heard or experienced, it isn’t good.
Every sense goes on high alert. I zero in on Hiller, noticing how her eyes dart between me and Emily, the tick of her eyebrow, and the dot of sweat running down the side of her neck.
“I see. I’m sorry Rob never mentioned you.”
Jen flinches at the implied slight that she wasn’t important enough to mention to his family. She thinks she was. Interesting. What double life was Rob leading?
“I’m sorry that we are officially meeting under such terrible circumstances,” she says.
