Anton studies me.
I hold his stare with an unreadable expression, eyes burning with fury.
Because I’m looking at a man who dared to put his hands on my wife.
Every cell in my body wants to close the six feet between us and show him what a correction actually feels like.
But not yet.
"Take me to my wife."
Anton tilts his head. "No pleasantries? No discussion of terms?"
"Take me to my wife."
He watches me for a moment, a man out of his depth but kidding himself that he’s not.
“Did you bring the papers?” he asks.
I reach into my jacket pocket, remove the documents that sign Fortune over to him, and push them into his chest. “Here are your fucking papers. Now take me to my wife.”
He opens them, checks for my signature and that everything is in order, and while he does so, I have to stop myself from grabbing him by the neck and unscrewing his head from his shoulders.
“It all looks in order.” He looks up and gives me a smug smile. “A pleasure doing business with you, Dante.”
He turns and walks toward a corridor off the main floor.
I follow, and his men fall in behind me.
The corridor is narrow. Two doors. Both steel. Anton stops at the second one and produces a key.
"She hasn't been harmed," he says. "Beyond the initial ... incident."
My blood runs cold. I stop and look at Anton with death in my eyes. “What the fuck does that mean?”
Despite my rampaging fury, I remain completely still.
Anton’s smugness slips for just a second. He knows if my wife has been hurt, the streets are going to be painted with his blood.
“No need to be so testy, Dante. She hasn’t been harmed.”
I notice a look pass between him and Flynn, and I feel a prickly sensation across the nape of my neck.
He’s lying.
What the fuck was done to my wife?
"Open the door."
He opens the door.
The room is small. Concrete. A table and two chairs. A camera in the corner.
And Sunny.
Her eyes find mine.
The world that has been tilting on its axis for the past few hours clicks back into place.
